Students at Othello High School say they love vocational courses. Celebrating vocational education week, the kids said the classes are practical and prepare them for the real world.

Republic
Local employers are needed for the Republic High School Job Shadow Day. Scheduled for March 15, the program is run by the vocational education department. The program gives students a peek into the real world of work.

Royal City
Fire District 10 is looking for a little help. It seems only two emergency medical technicians in Royal City are available for calls. The district may have to contract with Samaritan Ambulance to take calls if local people don’t volunteer. The district will train people as ETs, which takes 120 hours, or as first responders, which takes 60.

Jennifer Stinson, a standout basketball, volleyball and track star, is making news off the court with an engagement announcement. Stinson will wed Burdette Greeny III of Port Angeles, Wash., this fall. Greeny is playing minor league baseball in the Milwaukee Brewers system. The couple met while Stinson was attending Washington State University. Stinson has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach there.
Pend Oreille County
Newport
The Newport High School Knowledge Bowl team is boning up on history, geology, math and you name it. Only four days from the regional competition, the team, which has a 29-7 record, has its eye on a state berth. Varsity team members include Joe Shaver, Tighe Stuart, Liz Stuart and Ryan Koenig-Price.

The Washington State University Cooperative Extension office is expanding its hours in Spokane. The office at 222 N. Havana will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The extension office offers advice and information on residential horticulture. The Master Gardener Plant Clinic and Resource Center will expand its hours on March 1 to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Colville’s new mayor, Bob Anderson, says his first month in office has shown him just how little he knows about running city government. Although a longtime council member, Anderson says he’s amazed at the duties and responsibilities the job requires.

The state House of Representatives passed a resolution Thursday honoring Samuel H. Smith, who is stepping down this summer as the eighth president of Washington State University. Rep. Mark Schoesler sponsored the resolution. Smith looked on from the House gallery as legislators praised his 15-year tenure.

St. Maries
A Seattle-based toy manufacturer donated a truckload of big toy blocks and unassembled toys to the Elks Club recently. The Seattle company quit doing business and offered the toys to anyone willing to haul them away. Elks member Dave Ausman hauled them home to be used for this year’s Christmas baskets. An assembling and packaging party will be held closer to the holiday.

Students from Clark Fork, Lake Pend Oreille and Sandpoint high schools are participating in a Pathfinder marketing competition held throughout February by the Bonner Business Education Partnership. Pathfinder is a Web site designed to bring students and businesses together. Students will be competing to register businesses to Pathfinder. Two $1,000, two $750, and two $500 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarship winners also will receive one-year free Internet access from the Pend Oreille Valley Network.

The Chamber of Commerce recently awarded Margaret Moet $1,000 for five years of volunteer work at the Visitors Center. Moet is one of 20 people who volunteer at the center.

Foundation Northwest awarded $5,000 to Nature Conservancy’s North Idaho outdoor exploration program. Foundation Northwest supports community-based projects involved in civic and community development, human services, education, arts, culture and humanities. The exploration program offers community members, Anchor House students and 30 area schools with a variety of educational opportunities at its five North Idaho preserves.

Two Christian bands will perform a free concert from 8 to 11 tonight at the Latah County Fairgrounds. “Flight 180” from California and “Fishers of Men” from Spokane will entertain teens in the commercial building. Young Life, a youth organization, is sponsoring the concert. Tickets are available at local churches or from Charlie Gerke at the Moscow School District.

Five Wallace wrestlers are attending the A-3 State Wrestling Tournament at Idaho State University in Pocatello. Dominick Dire, Brandon Pine, Steve Dolson, Rian Comer, Nick Stinson and coach Bob Schreiber left Wednesday for the competition, which began Thursday night.

Hunters and fishermen purchasing conservation licenses and most special drawing licenses will have to provide their Social Security number, according to a law enacted by the 1999 Legislature. The law is designed to bring delinquent child support individuals into compliance.
