WSU Swimmers Set Four Marks
The Washington State women’s swimming team broke four school records Thursday on the first day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif.
The first record to fall was set in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Lindsay Henahan, Kelley Miedema, Sara Schmied and Rachelle Carano clocked in a time of 1 minute, 34.82 seconds to finish eighth.
Individually, Henahan moved on to the consolation finals of the 50-yard freestyle after finishing 11th in preliminaries with a time of 23.78 seconds. The freshman later finished in a time of 23.97, good enough for 13th. Her preliminary time places her second on the WSU’s all-time top-10 list for the event.
The Cougars placed fifth in the 400 medley relay with a 3:46.05 clocking to mark another school record. Miedema, a senior, led off with the 100 backstroke and secured her spot in the school record books with a time of 57.11 seconds. She was joined by teammates Erin Eldridge, Melissa Hubley and Henahan.
The finish was WSU’s best by a relay team at the Pac-10 championships.
Hubley set a school record in the 200 butterfly during time trials. The freshman sensation already held the record, but this time around, she qualfied for an Olympic trials cut and posted an NCAA Championships consideration time. Last year, her time was accepted for qualification into the NCAA Championships.
Conference competition continues through Saturday. Second-ranked Arizona leads the team scoring with 410 points. The Cougars are ninth with 106 points.
