Highlights from the past week in the Idaho Legislature.

They said it

“We wouldn’t be Scrooge McDuck anymore hoarding a $70 million surplus.” Rep. Jerry Stoicheff, D-Sandpoint said as she presented her proposed cap on student fees at Idaho’s Colleges and Universities.

Votes

Here are some of North Idaho lawmaker’s votes in the past week:

Show Them the Money: Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee members entertained an unsuccessful motion to eliminate all funding for high school exiting standards. The standards were funded at the governor’s recommended level of $500,000, less than half of what was requested. Voting to eliminate funding were Rep. Jim Clark, R-Hayden and Sen. Clyde Boatright R-Rathdrum. Voting against the measure was Rep. Don Pischner, R-Coeur d’Alene.

Sharing the Wealth: The House of Representatives approved a bill that gives fast-growing communities a fairer share of state sales tax revenue. Voting for the measure were Reps. Jeff Alltus, R-Hayden; John Campbell, R-Sandpoint; Jim Clark, R- Hayden; June Judd, D-St. Maries; Hilde Kellogg, R-Post Falls; Wayne Meyer, R-Rathdrum; Don Pischner, R-Coeur d’Alene; Mary Lou Shepherd, D-Pritchard; Jerry Stoicheff, D-Sandpoint. Voting against the bill was Rep. Chuck Cuddy, D-Orofino.

Tougher Penalty: A bill dubbed the Linda Huff bill easily passed the Senate, 30-1. The bill tightens up Idaho’s death penalty law regarding the killing of law enforcement officers. Voting for the Measure were Sens. Clyde Boatright, R-Rathdrum; Gordon Crow, R-Hayden; Jack Riggs, R-Coeur d’Alene; Shawn Keough, R-Sandpoint; and Marguerite McLaughlin, D-Orofino.
