Mummers Mark 100Th

In a century-old Philadelphia tradition, grown men donned sequined fabric, feathered costumes, silky dresses and wigs to march down city streets in the annual Mummers Parade. “That’s the great thing about New Year’s Eve in Philadelphia,” said Josh Maurer, 18. “You can party all night long and the next morning you got the Mummers to look forward to.” The New Year’s Day parade evolved from European winter holiday customs of masquerading and visiting friends. In the 1800s, masked revelers who went door-to-door eventually organized into clubs, and in 1901 the city started sponsoring the parade.
