Joe `Papa Joe’ Hedrick Spokane
Service for Joe W. “Papa Joe” Hedrick, 85, will be at 11 a.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.
Mr. Hedrick died Dec. 26. He was born in Tulsa, Okla.
He was a 20-year Spokane resident and was a member of the Carpenters Union and had worked in Metalline Falls, Wash.
Mr. Hedrick worked as a mechanic for Truck Town and retired in 1979. He was a member of the Teamsters Union.
His wife, June, preceded him in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Coleen Lacey of Spokane, Judy Quill of Coulee Dam, Wash., and Sandra Currall of Ketchikan, Alaska; a son, Brian Hedrick of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; two sisters, Maudie Stephens and Ruby Saegner, both of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Lynn Shelden Coeur d’Alene
Memorial service for Lynn C. Shelden, 81, will be held today at 1 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Urn committal will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Shelden, who was born in Montana, died Monday.
He grew up on the family farm in Montana and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps before enlisting in the Army Air Corps after high school. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Shelden returned to Montana after his military service and graduated in 1950 from the University of Montana in Missoula with a forestry degree.
He began a career with the Bureau of Land Management and later moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1967. He retired from the BLM in 1984 as an area manager.
Mr. Shelden was preceded in death by his first wife, Victoria in 1975. He married Gloria Stiteler in 1977.
He was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church, the Society of American Foresters and the Kootenai Environmental Alliance.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, James Shelden of Garfield, Wash., Jeffrey Shelden of Lewistown, Mont., and Robert Shelden of Spokane; a daughter, Melissa Shelden of Sparks, Nev.; a stepson, Dale Stiteler of Spokane; a sister, Margaret Hallock of Montana; and three granddaughters.

Alma Volz Spokane
No service will be held for Alma Yvetta Vasey Volz, 80, at her request. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Volz, who was born in Philadelphia, died Dec. 25.
She moved to Spokane in 1962 and worked as a cashier in a bookstore.
Her husband, Maurice Vasey, died in 1949.
Survivors include three sons, Steve Volz of Spokane, Frank Volz of Mead and Robert Volz of Spirit Lake, Idaho; a brother, Frank Cooper of Trevose, Pa.; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Cannata Spokane
Funeral Mass for Mary E. Cannata, 91, will be at 10 a.m. today at Assumption Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Cannata died Sunday.
She worked as a cook at a local restaurant.
Her husband of 66 years, Antonio, died in 1992.
Survivors include two daughters, Laura Rail and Theresa Murphy, both of Spokane; two brothers, John and Sandy Sicilia, both of Spokane; five sisters, Hazel LaJoie, Rose Morris, Virginia Shives, Ida Mark and Lucille Thams, all of Spokane; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Jacqueline (Wellington) Parker Spokane
Memorial service for Jacqueline (Wellington) Parker, 61, will be at 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Parker died Sunday.
She graduated from Rogers High School in 1956.
Mrs. Parker worked as a stock clerk for the Diana Shops in Spokane. She later was a private duty care giver for her mother for 10 years.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Michelle Parker of Spokane, Terri Blevins of Seattle and Patricia Parker of Houston; two sisters, Martha Wellington-Burnette of Spokane and Katherine Wellington of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Jimmy Wellington of Longview, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
Edna Furlott Spokane
Memorial service for Edna M. Furlott, 80, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Gretna Green Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Furlott died Sunday.
She was a lifetime Spokane resident and a homemaker.
Her husband, Kenneth, died in 1969.
Survivors include two sons, Edward Furlott of Spokane and Douglas Furlott of Newport, Wash.; three sisters, Erma Doffield, Winifred Kemnitz and Eleanor Clemens, all of Spokane; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Floyd Kemp Spokane
Service for Floyd E. Kemp, 92, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Kemp died Monday.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.
Mr. Kemp worked as a plant manager for Crescent Cleaners.
He was a member of the Eagles and Elks lodges.
His wife, Helen, died in 1991.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Etten of Spokane; a brother, Bill Kemp of California; a sister, Dolly Fullner of Spokane; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Marjorie (Bloom) Jones Spokane
Memorial service for Marjorie E. (Bloom) Jones, 92, will be at 3 p.m. Jan. 14 at Westminster Congregational Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Jones died Dec. 28.
She graduated from North Central High School and from the University of Idaho, where she was president of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
In 1935 she married Harry Jones.
She was a homemaker and a member of Westminster Congregational Church. She was involved in the Women’s Fellowship, Martha Chapter and the Congregational Club. She also was a member of the the PEO Chapter R, Gamma Phi Beta Alumni and the Waterford Resident’s Council.
Her husband died in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Bryce Jones; two daughters, Meredith Hilby and Judy Wooten; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Michael Boros Everett
Visitation for Michael E. Boros, 52, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa, Wash. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home in Spokane. Burial will precede at the Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa. Kramer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Spokane, Mr. Boros died Sunday.
His family lived in Tekoa when he was a child and moved back to Spokane in 1954. He graduated from University High School in 1966.
He served in the Navy during the late 1960s and served during the Vietnam War for one year.
Mr. Boros returned to Spokane and worked as a heavy-equipment operator in construction in Washington, Oregon, Montana and California.
He moved to Kent, Wash., 12 years ago and worked for the Snohomish County Public Utility Department in Everett. Mr. Boros recently moved to Everett.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Snohomish, Wash.
Survivors include his parents, Joseph and Lucille Boros of Spokane; and two sisters, Stacy Kuhling of Spokane and Janet Hutsell of East Wenatchee, Wash.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
Walter Maki Bonners Ferry, Idaho
Memorial for Walter Erick “Walt” Maki, 89, was Monday at Bonners Ferry Funeral Home.
Mr. Maki, who was born in Kaljoke, Finland, died Dec. 30.
He immigrated to America in 1912 with his family. He grew up in Springdale, Wash., where he graduated from high school. He later attended Washington State University for one year.
Mr. Maki moved to Coeur d’Alene and worked for Montgomery Ward before moving to Ephrata, Wash., where he worked for Standard Oil Co. In 1937 he married Georgina Ekstrom. They later divorced.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He later moved to Coeur d’Alene and worked for Standard Oil Co.
Mr. Maki moved to Bonners Ferry in 1948 and purchased Boundary Hardware Co., which he continued to operate until last Christmas Eve.
He was a former member of the Coeur d’Alene Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge and Lions Club.
Survivors include two sons, Chuck Maki of Edmonds, Wash., and Steve Maki of Moscow, Idaho; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Elmer Awbery Spokane
Memorial service for Elmer J. Awbery, 66, will be at 1 p.m. today at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2218. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 55-year Spokane resident, Mr. Awbery died Saturday. He was born in Lewistown, Mont.
He served in the Army. Mr. Awbery worked as a carpenter in general construction.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2218 and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; a son, Craig Johnson of Spokane; a daughter, Lynn of Seattle; several brothers and sisters; and three grandchildren.
Glen Kunde Priest River, Idaho
No service will be held for Glen Forest Kunde, 81. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Stevens Point, Wis., Mr. Kunde died Dec. 29.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
In 1959 he married Gerry Wortham. In 1969 he moved to Priest River.
Mr. Kunde operated Kunde Electric for more than 21 years. He retired in 1995.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years; two sons, Myron Kunde of Post Falls and Jack Kunde of Ventura, Calif.; five daughters, Yvette Doolittle of Seattle, Sharon Roberts of Yucaipa, Calif., Aleta Loops of Whittier, Calif., Betty of Colorado and Janie of Colorado; a sister, Ruth Baldwin of Camrillo, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jean (Newby) Parker Spokane
Memorial gathering for L. Jean (Newby) Parker, 69, will be held at a later date. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Parker died Sunday.
She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1948 and worked for the Newby’s Motel on Sunset Hill.
Mrs. Parker was a homemaker. She also had worked as a secretary for Marshall Wells and at J.C. Penney Co.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Kenneth; two daughters, Marilyn Linke and Virginia Moore, both of Spokane; a brother, Harold Newby Jr. of Spokane; a sister, Darlene Watson of Atascadero, Calif.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

John Brown Hazelton, Idaho
Service for John Raymond Brown, 25, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home in Spokane. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. White Mortuary in Twin Falls, Idaho, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Brown, who was born in Colville, Wash., died Dec. 30.
He grew up in Spokane and graduated from Rogers High School. He lived in Spokane until he was married, and moved to White Salmon, Wash., where he worked at Mid-Columbia Glass for more than two years.
Mr. Brown moved to Hazelton early last year to be near family. He worked as an auto mechanic for P.S.I. in Twin Falls.
Survivors include his wife, Michelle and son, Joseph, both of Hazelton; his father, Roger Brown of Hazelton; his mother, Dena Brown of Carnation, Wash.; three brothers, Roger and Ronnie Brown, both of Ione, Wash., and Robert Brown of Hazelton; and grandparents, John and Lila Middleton of Ione, and Fern Hinton of Spokane.
Maurice Hempel Nine Mile Falls
Memorial service for Maurice J. Hempel, 73, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Community Church of Our Savior in Nine Mile Falls. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hempel, who was born in Cochecton Center, N.Y., died Friday.
He was a 34-year resident of Nine Mile Falls.
Mr. Hempel served in the Army during World War II. He worked as a carpenter and retired in 1988.
Mr. Hempel was a member of the Carpenters Union in California and Washington.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Ruth; two sons, Maurice Hempel of Deer Park and Mark Hempel of Graham, Wash.; two daughters, Marlise Horn of Spokane and Maureen Painter of Nine Mile Falls; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

William `Doc’ Howard Smelterville, Idaho
Memorial service for William Thomas “Doc” Howard, 66, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the Kings Inn in Kingston, Idaho.
Mr. Howard, who was born in Hansen, Idaho, near Twin Falls, died Friday.
He received a doctorate from the Metropolitan Collegiate Institute of Science in London, and later served as an instructor of electro-hydraulic mechanical engineering at various colleges. He also was a self-employed heavy equipment diesel mechanic.
Mr. Howard lived in Utah before moving to the Silver Valley in 1975.
Survivors include a son, Shane Howard of Pinehurst, Idaho; three stepdaughters, Deonne Hill of Spokane, and Denise Hanson and Chris Vlastelic, both of Kingston; his mother, Mildred Howard of Hansen; a brother, Don Howard of Ketchikan, Alaska; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
