Now Hear This, Ferris Edges Lc
GSL girls
With all the noise and craziness surrounding the Rubber Chicken spirit contest, the Ferris girls basketball team couldn’t hear coach Art Rojas or even its point guard for that matter.
So the Saxons decided to make it simple.
In the second half, Ferris concentrated on dumping the ball inside to Jenny Benzel and Megan Taylor. Taylor scored seven of her 12 points in the fourth quarter for a 48-44 victory over Lewis and Clark Friday night at the Arena before 6,835 fans. LC took home Chuck the Chicken for the second straight year.
“Rojas told us at halftime we needed to get me and Jenny the ball more,” Taylor said. “So they did.”
Benzel fed Taylor for consecutive baskets that gave the Saxons a 44-38 lead with 1:04 to play. Though there was a few tense moments in the final minute, that was enough, with Katie Foster’s two free throws icing it with 6 seconds left.
“We had a hard time all game recognizing our sets and it was hard to hear,” Rojas said. “We simplified it, go to the big girl and Megan is a good player.”
The Saxons also tightened their defense and kept Sarah Travis, who had 23 points, from scoring for the final 5 minutes.
“Where they hurt us was inside,” said LC coach Jim Redmon.
“That’s hard to deal with with our size.”
LC pulled within 44-40 with a minute left on a Sarah Bassett layin. Saxons junior Courtney Lynn sank two free throws at 34.1 seconds before Bassett scored again at 27.2 to make it 46-42. Tigers sophomore Kathleen Malone took advantage of a Ferris turnover and scored with 10.5 seconds left to pull them within two.
Katie Foster sealed the game for Ferris when she converted two free throws on a 1-and-1 with 6.8 seconds on the clock.
Free-throw shooting and rebounding also hurt the Tigers, Redmon said. Both teams had 17 free throws but the Tigers hit just eight and Ferris made 12, eight in the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t bring our game like we normally do, like we did at Central Valley (on Tuesday),” Taylor said. “But we hung in and played better in the second half. It was very loud, but it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it, I’m going to miss it a lot.”
