Wallace Staglund Sandpoint
Visitation for Wallace L. “Wally” Staglund, 74, will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Memorial service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Sandpoint First Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint.
Mr. Staglund, who was born in Custer, Wash., died Thursday.
He grew up in Lynden, Wash., and graduated from high school there. He later worked at various jobs prior to beginning a career with General Telephone Co.
Mr. Staglund married Gloria Miller in 1945 and the couple lived in Everett before moving to Sandpoint.
He held many positions with General Telephone and retired as a budget analyst in 1982.
Mr. Staglund had served four years on the Sandpoint City Council and was instrumental in establishing the Sandpoint Rotary Club.
He also served as the head of a bicentennial committee and was past exalted ruler of the Sandpoint Elks Lodge.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Lakeside Masonic Lodge AF and AM. He was an umpire in the Sandpoint Little League and Pony League baseball.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years; four children, Marilee Renfrew of Moscow, Idaho, Cheryl Clark of Coeur d’Alene, and Dan Staglund and Linda Bottcher, both of Sandpoint; a sister, Virginia Duim of Granite Falls, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.
Rosamond Tackett Cheney
Memorial service for Rosamond E. Tackett, 91, will be held in the spring. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 15-year Cheney resident, Mrs. Tackett died Dec. 29.
She was born in Shelbyville, Ind., and later moved to Montana and California before moving to Spokane in 1948.
Mrs. Tackett worked as the housewares department manager for The Bon Marche for 20 years.
She was a volunteer at Deaconess Medical Center for more than 25 years.
Mrs. Tackett was a member of the Daughters of the Nile and Martha Chapter 60, the Order of Eastern Star in Cheney and the Liberty Lake Garden Club.
Her husband of 48 years, Charles, died in 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte Galloway of Cheney; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheney Care Center.
Mary Palmer Sprague, Wash.
Memorial service for Mary B. Palmer, 75, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Hayford Community Church in Spokane. Private burial will be at the Maccabee Cemetery in Sprague. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Palmer, who was born in Fairbury, Neb., died Tuesday.
She was a 10-year Sprague resident.
Mrs. Palmer moved to Spokane in 1960 and worked as the head cook for the Broadway Truck Stop for 17 years before retiring in 1990.
She was a member of the Hayford Community Church, the Sprague Grange, the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include her husband of 10 years, Gale; two sons, Les Sanderson of Sprague and Edward Sanderson of Hereford, Texas; a daughter, Mary Michael of Edwall, Wash.; a stepson, William Palmer of Deer Park; nine grandchildren, two stepgranddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
Freddie Johnson Medical Lake
Memorial service for Freddie Lee Johnson Sr., 64, will be at 10 a.m. today in the auditorium at Medical Lake High School. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Waycross, Ga., Mr. Johnson died Tuesday.
He graduated from Center High School in Georgia in 1955.
Mr. Johnson served in the Air Force as a jet engine mechanic technician from 1955 to 1975.
He moved to Medical Lake in 1970 and worked as a custodian at Medical Lake High School for 22 years. He retired in 1998.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary; three sons, Stanley Johnson of Medical Lake, Freddie Johnson Jr. of Seattle and Justin Johnson of Barksdale, La.; three daughters, Pharelon Johnson of Medical Lake, Gloria Dumas of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Shirley Martinez of Fountain, Colo.; his mother, Rosa Lee of Waycross; two sisters, Jannette and Janice, both of Waycross; and 13 grandchildren.
Edgar Ashton Spirit Lake, Idaho
Service for Edgar Ray Ashton, 62, will be today at 9 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rathdrum, Idaho. Graveside service will follow at noon at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ashton, who was born in Sapulpa, Okla., died Wednesday.
He served with the Marine Corps during the Korean War and with the Navy in Vietnam before retiring in 1985.
After his armed forces career, Mr. Ashton moved to the St. Maries area and worked as a jailer for the Benewah County Sheriff’s Department. He moved to Spirit Lake three years ago.
Mr. Ashton married Doris Reed in 1951 and the couple divorced in 1970. He later married Inez March.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the North American Hunting Club. He also was a Master Gardener.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Leslyn Lang of Virginia and Christy Harris of California; three brothers, Darrell Ashton of Fernwood, Idaho, and Bobby and Danny Ashton, both of Oklahoma; a sister, Betty Street of Moab, Utah; a stepbrother, James Miller of Washington; and seven grandchildren.
Merlin Weed Loon Lake, Wash.
Service for Merlin “Pete” Weed, 80, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Mr. Weed, who was born in Circle, Mont., died Tuesday.
He moved to Nine Mile Falls in 1950 and worked as a power plant operator at Washington Water Power for more than 28 years.
Mr. Weed moved to Loon Lake two years ago.
He was a member of the Washington Water Power Trailblazers and the Five Mile Grange.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Barbara; a son Edward Weed of Dishman; two daughters, Shari Torosian of Spokane and Judith McDonald of Lompoc, Calif.; two sisters, Evaline Brittner and Helen Aleye, both of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, George Weed of Coeur d’Alene; five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
Mildred Hoffman Spokane
Memorial service for Mildred Joyce Hoffman, 64, will be at 2 p.m. today at Opportunity Free Methodist Church. Atlantis Cremation and Burial in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hoffman, who was born in Wallace, died Sunday.
She was a 40-year Spokane resident.
Mrs. Hoffman graduated from Wallace High School and Eastern Washington University, and served in the Army from 1955 to 1957.
She was a high school teacher in Silverton, Colo.
Her husband, George, died in 1965.
Survivors include a son, Dan Hoffman of California; a daughter, Amy Hicks of Spokane; a brother, John Chapen of Delta, Idaho; and nine grandchildren.
Patricia (Asan) Dahmen Spokane
Vigil service for Patricia (Asan) Dahmen, 62, will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church.
A 19-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Dahmen died Tuesday.
She was born in Spokane and in 1956 graduated from Marycliff High School.
Mrs. Dahman worked as a dental assistant in Spokane and Seattle.
Survivors include her husband, Bill; a son, Mike Anderson of Newport Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Christine Nutley of Spokane and Deanne Hamblin of Kent, Wash.; a sister, Virginia Asan of Spokane; and four grandchildren.
Arthur Olson Spokane
Service for Arthur J. Olson, 96, will be today at noon at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Mr. Olson, who was born in Lidgerwood, N.D., died Tuesday.
He was a 33-year Spokane resident and a self-employed contractor.
His wife of 60 years, Amy, died in 1996.
Survivor include three sons, Dean, Lyle and Daniel Olson, all of Spokane; three daughters, Sharon Hjelm of Veradale, Marilyn Zerart of Renton, Wash., and Valentine McAllister of Phoenix; a brother, Perry Olson of Spokane; a sister, Alice Christopherson of Dilworth, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Michelle Meksch Post Falls
Memorial service for Michelle K. Meksch, 29, will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene.
Mrs. Meksch, who was born in Whittier, Calif., died Wednesday from a lifelong illness.
She moved to Coeur d’Alene with her family in 1981 and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1988. In 1991 she married Steven Meksch and they settled in Post Falls.
Mrs. Meksch graduated from the University of Idaho in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in education.
Survivors include her husband; her parents, Ray and Gail Carter of Coeur d’Alene; two sisters, Stacy Pomerinke of Post Falls and Kelly Javoux of St. Charles, Mo.; her grandparents, Dick and Kathryn Fought of California and Velma Stockglausner of St. Louis; and her great-grandmother, Lero “Happy” Beeler of California.
George Moe Spokane
Visitation for George Moe, 93, will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens and a memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Moe, who was born in Hurdsfield, N.D., died Wednesday.
He was a 59-year Spokane resident.
Mr. Moe worked as a motor winder for General Electric and Westinghouse.
He was also an interim pastor for the Highway Chapel in Spokane and the Open Bible Church in Eltopia and Wilbur, Wash.
Mr. Moe was a member of the First Church of the Open Bible.
His wife of 55 years, Inga, died in 1996.
Survivors include two sons, David Moe of Maple Valley, Wash., and George Moe of Columbia, Md.; two daughters, Marilyn Deneke of Colbert and Carol Maurer of Great Falls, Mont.; two sisters, Dagmar Tracy of Camano Island, Wash., and Mary Swardstrom of Spearfish, S.D.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Janette Kummer Chattaroy
Memorial service for Janette M. Kummer, 80, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kummer, who was born in Wales, N.D., died Dec. 25.
She was a 55-year Chattaroy resident.
Mrs. Kummer served in the Navy from 1942 to 1944.
She received her teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School and taught in Chattaroy and Elk elementary schools.
Mrs. Kummer also was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years. She retired in 1983.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Alfred; a son, Mark Kummer of Deer Park; two daughters, Marcia St. Amand of Chattaroy and Lorene Wissink of Chewelah, Wash.; a brother, Art Stevens of Husom, Wash.; two sisters, Ada Taylor of Fresno, Calif., and Gladys Earles of Palmer, Ark.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Richard Solberg Jr. Spokane
Memorial service for Richard R. Solberg Jr., 44, will be at 10 a.m. today at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Solberg, who was born in Yakima, died Sunday.
He was a 34-year Spokane resident and a 1973 graduate of Central Valley High School.
Mr. Solberg had worked at Albertson’s for 17 years and at Keytronics for five years. He had been working in the sheet metal trade for the past five years.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the Sheet Metal Workers Local 66.
Survivors include a son, Ryan Solberg of Spokane; his parents, Dick and Delores Solberg of Spokane; two brothers, Jeff and Steve Solberg, both of Spokane; and a sister, Kathy Simon of Dallesport, Wash.
Margaret McLean Spokane
Service for Margaret A. McLean, 83, will be at 3 p.m. today at Spokane Valley Baptist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Pullman, Mrs. McLean died Dec. 28.
Mrs. McLean was a homemaker, and had worked as a laboratory technician and at Medical Service Corp.
She was longtime Spokane resident and a member of the Spokane Valley Baptist Church and the Rockrollers.
Survivors include four daughters, Linda McLean, Nancy Corbin, Katherine McLean and Patricia Yates; three brothers, Donald, Fredrick and Kenneth Moore; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Earl Mykines Usk, Wash.
Service for Earl J. “Buster” Mykines, 66, will be at 10 a.m. today at ShermanKnapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Ione, Wash.
Born in Tiger, Wash., Mr. Mykines died Monday.
He grew up in Ione and in 1952 graduated from Ione High School.
Mr. Mykines served in the Army from 1952 to 1955 during the Korean War.
He married Pat Zigler in 1956; they later divorced.
Mr. Mykines worked as a logger in the Ione area and later as an operating engineer in Mercury, Nev., for 25 years.
He moved to Usk seven years ago.
He was a member of the Washington State Cattleman’s Association and Operating Engineers Union Local 12.
Survivors include a son, Michael Mykines of Colbert; a daughter, Lori Kottke of Spokane; a brother, John Mykines of Cusick, Wash.; a sister, Colleen Langford of Las Vegas; and three grandchildren.
Irva Kirkpatrick Spokane
Service for Irva (Magart) Kirkpatrick, 91, will be at 10 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth. Burial will follow at the Moran Prairie Cemetery.
Mrs. Kirkpatrick, who was born in Scotia, Wash., died Wednesday.
She was an 85-year Spokane resident.
Mrs. Kirkpatrick graduated from Richland High School near Valleyford in 1926.
She was a homemaker, and had worked as a cook and housekeeper for private residences. She also had tinted photos at Spokane Film.
Her husband of 39 years, John died in 1969.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Gull of Spokane; a son, Rodney Kirkpatrick of Kennewick; two brothers, Delbert Magart of Spokane and Leonard Magart of Newport, Wash.; two sisters, Leat Cornwall of Spokane and Juanita Kirkpatrick of Elk; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
John Ellsworth Spokane
Memorial service for John A. Ellsworth, 62, will be at 4:30 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Ellsworth died Tuesday.
He graduated from North Central High School and later worked as an equipment operator for the Spokane Fire Department for 20 years.
He was the past president of the Spokane Firefighters Union, and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Spokane Fly Fisherman’s Association. Survivors include his companion of 22 years, Betty; two sons, Jeff and Bruce Ellsworth, both of Spokane; a daughter, Julie Gibeau of Spokane; two stepsons, Bill Henderson of Idaho and Ted Henderson of Alaska; two stepdaughters, Susan Erickson of Idaho and Becky Goldberg of Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, Jim Ellsworth of Seattle; and six grandchildren.
Elroy Hubbard Northport, Wash.
Memorial service for Elroy H. “Roy” Hubbard will be at 3 p.m. today at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hubbard, 69, died Saturday.
He was born in Cheney and lived in the Spokane area for most of his life.
Mr. Hubbard served in the Navy from 1948 to 1952 and worked as a computer field service engineer for 37-1/2 years for the National Cash Register Organization before retiring in 1988.
Mr. Hubbard moved to Northport 12 years ago.
Survivors include two sons, Allen and Kyle Hubbard, both of Spokane; a daughter, Denise Meyer of Spokane; three brothers, three sisters and four grandchildren.
Richard McKenna Spokane
Memorial service for Richard W. McKenna, 78, will be at 1 p.m. today at Manito Park Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Sagus, Mass., Mr. McKenna died Monday.
He served in the Army from 1943 to 1947.
In 1947 he married Cleda Seaton and in 1972 they moved to California, where he worked for Baker Packers Inc. He retired in 1987.
He moved to Spokane after his wife’s death in 1988.
Mr. McKenna was a member of Manito Park Jehvovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include a son, Richard McKenna of Spokane; a daughter, Trisha Mercy of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
