How Many Recall Rape Is A Crime?
An astonishing percentage of the young men surveyed by researchers from two British universities think it is OK to rape a woman in some circumstances.
The circumstances? Well, marriage, for one. Twenty percent said forcing their wives to have sex is acceptable.
Nearly 20 percent saw nothing wrong with rape “if a woman had slept with loads of men.”
Ten percent said rape is acceptable if “the man was so turned on he can’t stop.”
Ten percent of the men said they’d rape a woman “if nobody would find out.” (From December/January Ms.)
* Groupies of some sort: We understand fans and athletes, and fans who worship athletes. But really, it is indeed baffling why anyone would pay hundreds of dollars for a used hockey jersey because it has the player’s blood on it.
Yes, there’s not one, but three Web sites that offer up used NHL jerseys. For $875, you could have snapped up Tony Twist’s Quebec Nordiques jersey with stick and puck marks, bloodstains, torn sleeves and collar and sweat stains. Or Tim Hunter’s Calgary Flames jersey that sports board paint as well as blood and puck marks. It went for $500. Both of those were available from dropthegloves.com.
If the mere thought of a smelly, bloody jersey hanging in your den drives you to a frenzy, then also check out game-worn.com and byronshockeyland.com. (From December Maxim)
* Noting a passing: The January issue of New Woman will be the magazine’s last. Publisher Rodale Inc. is halting publication because “in today’s highly competitive consumer marketplace, it would be difficult for New Woman to achieve a leadership position,” says company president John Griffin.
Launched in 1970, the fashion and beauty magazine had a circulation of nearly 1.2 million in the first half of 1999, but its number of ad pages lags far behind what most competitors draw. And New Woman, like all women’s magazines, will face formidable new competition when Oprah Winfrey’s still-untitled publication arrives in March. (From Newsday)
* Is this a good thing? A new razor by Light Solutions will deliver a shave so close it will last a couple of months. After you apply a cooling gel just like shaving cream, the new Laser Razor’s near-infrared beam penetrates your skin and makes all the stubble fall out within about two days.
It’s still being tested but should be available some time this decade. The expected price tag? About $500. (From January Wired)
* Setting the record straight: The “Mile-High Club” is not a macho myth, nor is having sex in flight illegal.
Travel Holiday magazine reports that, although airplane bathrooms are smaller than the backseat of most cars, the “Mile-High Club” thrives.
The FAA says most airlines don’t have a policy against it. And, this year, Virgin Atlantic airline will introduce private sleepers for two ($5,500 per person) on its London-New York flights. (From the Philadelphia Inquirer)
