Bruins Maul Cold-Shooting Cougars

UCLA scored the first 16 points of the game and cruised to an 87-60 win over Washington State in Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball action Sunday in Los Angeles.
Maylana Martin led four UCLA players in double-figure scoring with a game-high 21 points and added eight rebounds. Janae Hubbard added 15 points and eight boards for the Bruins (8-4, 2-0 Pac-10).
Juniors Victoria Harrod and Joanna Smith each recorded season highs with 14 and 11 points, respectively, for Washington State (3-8, 0-2.
The Cougars didn’t score their first points until the 11:41 mark in the first half. Alke Dietel’s basket sparked a 10-2 run by WSU to pull the Cougars within 18-10 with 8:07 remaining in the half.
However, Martin scored 16 points in the first half to enable the Bruins to open a 40-18 lead at intermission.
Dietel, the Cougars’ leading scorer, was held to eight points on 3-for-11 shooting. Dietel finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
Washington State opens its Pac-10 home season against Arizona on Feb. 13 at 7p.m.

Tashara Carter had 21 points to lead Southern California to a 77-66 Pacific-10 Conference victory over Washington in Los Angeles.
Carter scored eight of her points in the game’s final 2 minutes. Southern California (7-5, 2-0) was also led by Danielle Golay with 17 points and Tiffany Elmore posted 16 points.
Loree Payne was Washington’s top scorer with 22 points and four assists. Megan Franza added 18 points for the Huskies (4-10, 0-2).
Southern California had a 17-point advantage, 48-31, at halftime, while shooting a season best 51.4 percent from the floor in the half.
The Trojans opened the second half with a 7-0 run, but Washington was able to cut into the team’s 22-point lead.
Melissa Erickson had a layup that brought the Huskies within three points with 2:15 remaining in the game.
Carter’s jumper with 1:54 left allowed USC to regain control of the game.
