New Primus Release Best Yet
Les Claypool is undoubtably one of the best bass guitar players ever to live. His insanely quick and accurate bass work is absolutely exhilarating to listen to. Larry LaLonde’s guitar and Brian “Brain” Mantia’s drumming merely accent Claypool’s deafening riffs, which are the clear focal point of Primus’ music.
A blend of funk, punk and thrash, “Antipop” follows in the steps of Primus’ six previous albums.
However, there is enough of a contrast in the instrumentation that all of the tracks sound new and refreshing. One obvious plus is that this album seems to contain more of LaLonde’s blistering guitar solos.
Lyrics-wise, Primus has consistently been top-notch. As always, Claypool’s witty and often sarcastic lyrics are present, though they take a back seat to his spectacular bass riffs.
One change in Primus’ repertoire is the collaboration with other artists in the creation of this album. The most notable of which include guitarists Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and James Hetfield of Metallica. These artists audibly expand the band’s musical possibilities and contribute to a number of excellent tracks.
“Antipop” is one of Primus’ greatest pieces yet. Any Primus fans worth their “Pork Soda” need this album.
