Mum’S The Word In 2000

A commemorative coin marking the 100th year of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who was born Aug. 4, 1900, went on sale Monday. The five-pound coin (about $8) features a portrait of the “Queen Mum” along with her signature and flag-waving crowds. The flip side features a portrait of her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Mint chose the design after a competition between eight portrait sculptors. The winner, Ian Rank-Broadley, said, “I wanted to portray a realistic portrait which showed Her Majesty’s dignified bearing of many years. Her life mirrors the century, which is why she is close to all our hearts.” The silver-colored coin will initially be available in a presentation folder, priced at about $16.
