Luyendyk Stays Retired

Arie Luyendyk planned to un-retire for this year’s Indianapolis 500, but Sam Schmidt’s recent accident persuaded the two-time Indy winner to stay on the sidelines.

Luyendyk and Schmidt, who was paralyzed from the chest down in the Jan. 6 accident at Orlando, Fla., were teammates for Treadway last May. Schmidt was transferred from Orlando to a rehab facility in St. Louis on Tuesday.

Portuguese driver Carlos Sousa and his co-driver Joao Manuel Luz were seriously injured in a four-car crash during the Dakar Rally in Libya, race organizers said. Six other participants were injured.
