WSU’S Henry Breaks Record In 55 Meters

Washington State sopho- more Anson Henry set the meet record in the 55-meter dash in the Jerry Martin Invitational Indoor Track and Field meet Saturday at Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney.

Henry’s time of 6.22 seconds broke the mark of 6.24 set by Washington’s Ja’Warren Hooker in 1998. Henry’s time also bettered the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying standard of 6.26.

Idaho’s Joachim Olsen won the men’s shot put with a throw of 64 feet, 2 inches, breaking the Martin Invitational record of 58-1/2, set by Eric Johnson of Washington in 1989.

Washington State’s Ian Waltz was second at 61-3/4.

Olsen’s mark exceeds the NCAA Championships automatic qualifying standard of 62-4, and Waltz exceeded the provisional mark of 59-3/4.

It was Waltz’ his first competitive throw after spending the 1999 season as a redshirt.

WSU junior Andrea Thornton tossed the 20-pound weight a school-record 59-1-1/2 to win the event and collect an NCAA provisional mark.

In men’s dual-meet scoring, WSU defeated Washington 59-34, and beat host Eastern Washington 59-47. In women’s team scoring, WSU defeated Washington 68-36, and EWU 60-48. Idaho did not send a full team.

High school gymnastics

Ferris placed third in the team standings and Lakeside sophomore Katie Dinsmore finished fifth in the all-around during an invitational at Sehome High in Bellingham.

The host Mariners won the meet with 177.35 points, followed by Rogers of Puyallup with 171.65 and Ferris’ 171.1. Lakeside placed fifth, University sixth.

Columbia River’s Alison Stanley won the uneven bars and floor exercise to total 36.95 points, tops in the all-around. Dinsmore, second in the vault with a 9.4, totaled 35.95.

Ferris freshman Heather Malott (35.65) finished sixth in the all-around. She placed second on the bars, with an 8.9.
