Technology may soon add a new dimension to online shopping.

Eventually, shoppers could explore a store where everything is their size and taste, all from the comfort of their home.

But don’t expect a full range of gee-whiz innovations anytime soon.

After years of promises, manufacturers are moving ahead with plans for a range of interconnected devices such as a refrigerator that can read bar codes as you put groceries away and reorder when the cupboard is bare.
