Helen `Peg’ Martens Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Service for Helen “Peg” Martens, 68, will be today at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Martens, who was born in Sandpoint, died Friday.

She married Paul Martens in 1952 and was a homemaker.

She and her husband moved to California in 1956 and to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1990.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Michael Martens of California; two daughters, Susan Hibert and Cynthia Martens, both of California; three brothers, Richard Rauer of Oregon, Don Rauer of Montana and Allen Rauer of Boise; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lewis Shields Spokane

Funeral Mass for Lewis Millard Shields, 84, will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Trentwood. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 50-year Spokane resident, Mr. Shields died Thursday. He was born in Salem, Ore.

Mr. Shields worked as a mechanic for Central Pre-Mix. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 370.

His wife of 58 years, Evelyn, died in 1994.

Survivors include four sons, Thomas Shields of Liberty Lake, Lewis Shields of Vancouver, Wash., James Shields of Wallace, Idaho, and Larry Shields of Penryn, Calif.; two daughters, Emalene Wirth and Mary Morrison, both of Spokane; two sisters, Margaret Messerly and Rita Pray, both of Malta, Mont.; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Opal Young Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Opal Irene Young, 84, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Pines Mausoleum in Spokane. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at the Open Bible Church in Plummer, Idaho.

Mrs. Young, who was born in Othello, Wash., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Othello High School in 1934 and moved to Ritzville, Wash., where she worked at the courthouse.

In 1941 Mrs. Young moved to Spokane and worked as a waitress. In 1952 she moved to Coeur d’Alene and worked at Safeway and Templin’s Restaurant.

She married Charles Young in 1958, and they moved to St. Maries in 1962. In 1965 they moved moved to Plummer where they operated the Shell Service Station. Her husband died in 1985.

Mrs. Young moved back to Coeur d’Alene in 1994.

She was a member of Tillicum Rebekah Lodge 109 in Plummer.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Loretta Hall of Deer Park; three stepgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lois Kleinfeldt Spokane

No service will be held for Lois Kleinfeldt, 67, at her request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kleinfeldt, who died Sunday, was born in Urba, Ill. She was a 60-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan Hurt, Deborah Taggart and Kathy Ader, all of Spokane; two sons, Gerald Flees of Spokane and Edward Kleinfeldt of Arizona; eight grandchildren and four grea-grandchildren.

Joe Sprenger Genesee, Idaho

Viewing for Joe M. Sprenger, 93, will be today from noon to 9 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho. Service is planned for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

Mr. Sprenger, who was born on the family homestead in the Thorn Creek area near Genesee, died Saturday.

He grew up in Thorn Creek and in 1930 married Jessie Kane. They farmed on the homestead in Genesee for many years.

Mr. Sprenger also was a master craftsman and carpenter and worked for his son at Sprenger Construction in the Moscow area for more than 20 years.

He was a member of the Uniontown Co-op, and the Moscow Moose Lodge.

His wife died in 1970.

Survivors include his son, Jim Sprenger of Lewiston, Idaho; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Rosa (Fox) Meyer Loon Lake, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Rosa Franciska (Fox) Meyer, 88, will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Presentation Roman Catholic Church in Deer Park. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Meyer, who was born in Sawyer, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She graduated from Priest River (Idaho) High School in 1928. In 1938 she married George Meyer and they moved to Loon Lake.

Mrs. Meyers and her family operated the Meyer Dairy Ranch in Loon Lake from 1952 to 1995.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Presentation Church, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church Altar Society in Clayton, Wash., Clayton Grange, Clayton Senior Citizen, Loon Lake Historical Society and Loon Lake Loon Association.

Her husband died in 1955.

Survivors include two sons, Clifford and Don Meyer, both of Loon Lake; a daughter, Marilyn Reilly of Deer Park; two sisters, Leona Judge of Sagle, Idaho, and Leota Judge of Pingree, Idaho; six grandchildren, two foster grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and five foster great-grandchildren.

Henry Biersdorff Bakersfield, Calif.

Service for Henry Carl Biersdorff, 81, will be today at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Biersdorff, who was born in Grass Range, Mont., died Jan. 16.

He grew up in Grass Range and then moved to Minnesota before serving with the Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Biersdorff settled in the St. Maries area after his military service and lived there off and on throughout the years, most recently returning in the early 1980s.

He moved to Bakersfield, Calif., about 10 years ago. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth of Florida, Ethel May Mueller of Las Vegas and Carla Biersdorff of Reno, Nev.; a son, John Biersdorff of Reno; three sisters, Ann Wissland, Doris Avalos and Gladys Monji, all of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carl Deming Post Falls

Memorial Service for Carl Bruce Deming, 68, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls.

Mr. Deming, who was born in Rapid City, S.D., died Thursday.

He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1951 and served in the Air Force until 1955.

Mr. Deming married Anna Gertrude Kachel in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1955. They settled in Coeur d’Alene.

He lived out of the area from 1956 until 1961 while working for Boeing in the Bomarc Missile Program. He then moved to Post Falls and worked for his father at Deming Machine and Supply Co. in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Deming retired from the business, which became Deming Industries, as president and general manager in 1995.

He was a member of the American Electroplaters Society, The Handyman’s Club of America, American Modelers Association, and Post Falls Flyers and Miniature Aircraft Association.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Curtis Deming of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Jeffrey Deming of Post Falls and Michael Deming of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Carla Ann Deming of Spokane; a brother, Harold Deming of Coeur d’Alene; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bobby `Ham’ Hamilton Sequim, Wash.

Graveside service for Bobby C. “Ham” Hamilton, 75, was Thursday at the Moscow (Idaho) Cemetery. Mr. Hamilton, who was born in Pasco, died Jan. 15.

He graduated from Moscow High School in 1942 and enlisted in the Army. He trained B-17 pilots at the Deming, N.M., military facility during World War II.

Mr. Hamilton returned to Moscow after his military discharge and earned a degree in architecture from the University of Idaho. He also worked as an apprentice at the Moscow Cabinet Shop.

In 1948 he married Bette McCormick. They moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he worked in architecture and became involved in the mining industry.

Mr. Hamilton retired in 1962 and they lived in Phoenix, Ariz., and St. John and Harrington, Wash., before moving to Sequim in 1986.

He and his wife spent winters in San Diego and traveled extensively. His wife died in 1991.

He married Glenna Lowe in 1992 and they lived in Sequim and visited Moscow several times a year.

Mr. Hamilton was involved in and funded various Moscow community land development and construction projects, including the Hamilton-Lowe Aquatic Center. He also created several UI scholarships.

Survivors include his wife; a sister, Eloise Durse of Kennewick; three stepsons, Mike Lowe of Alabama, Dick Lowe of Moscow and Mitch Lowe of Oregon; 10 stepgrandchildren, one stepgreat-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Harry Chisholm Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Harry E. Chisholm, 89, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Jesuit Chapel on the Gonzaga University campus in Spokane. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Chisholm died last Tuesday.

He grew up in the Spokane area and in 1932 graduated from Gonzaga University. He then began a 25-year career with Bekins Moving and Storage in Spokane and transferred to Seattle.

Mr. Chisholm later worked for North American Van Lines in Seattle and retired in 1982 as vice president of marketing.

During his retirement he volunteered at Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle and at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds, Wash. He also was a volunteer at Eisenhower Medical Center in California and was a member of Toastmasters International.

He later returned to the Spokane area before moving to Coeur d’Alene. His wife, Martha, died in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Tiede of Bethesda, Md., and Sue Dunton of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Florence Klessig of Nevada; five grandchildren, Kris, Lisa, Thomas, Wendy and Mike; and seven great-grandchildren.

Edwin Carter Bayview, Idaho

No service will be held for Edwin T. Carter, 89, at his request. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carter, who was born in Spokane, died Jan. 17.

He grew up in Spokane and attended Lewis and Clark High School and Gonzaga University.

He married Jean Goodsell. She died in 1945.

Mr. Carter later married Joyce Holman. She died in 1970.

He lived in Deer Lake and worked for the Postal Service for 31 years, retiring in 1970.

In 1974 he moved to Bayview, Idaho, and married Montana Winebrenner in 1976.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Craig Carter of Pateros, Wash.; a stepson, Loren Carter of Virginia; a stepdaughter, Carol Carter of California; a brother, George Carter of Seattle; and one grandchild.
