WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

The Chamber of Commerce is holding a sweetheart contest for residents to nominate a person they think does sweet things for others. One man and one women will be chosen from the nominations and honored at a Feb. 9 luncheon.

Ferry County Republic

The Rose and Crown Thrift Shop has raised money for a special bicycle for Ferry County Memorial Hospital. The bike is for rehabilitative work.

Grant County Moses Lake

Mark Evans is trying to raise $46,000 to purchase The Bridge Youth Dynamics Center. The faith-based center brings activities to several hundred kids weekly. Evans, the center’s director, is planning an auction fund-raiser Feb. 12. To donate goods or services, or for tickets, call (509) 765-4184.

Lincoln County Creston

The annual Beef Information Day will be Thursday at Deb’s Cafe in Creston. The topic for this year’s conference is “Making the Most of Your Grazing Resource,” and will be led by WSU Cooperative Extension agent Tom Platt. He will discuss saving money by harvesting forage with cattle instead of machinery. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and costs $10.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Newport resident David Grantski has announced he will run against Rep. Bob Sump of Republic for the 7th District state representative seat. Grantski says the key to his campaign will be staying local. He believes representatives spend too much time in Olympia and not enough time at home listening to people.

Spokane County Spokane

Construction continues on the intersection of U.S. Highway 395 and Hatch Road as part of the widening of the highway from Wandermere to milepost 172 on Wild Rose Prairie. A temporary traffic light was installed to enhance safety for turning. The work will include widening the area to reopen the southbound left-turn lane.

Stevens County Chewelah

Police Officer Mark Burrows has noticed that curbside parking is anything but curbside thanks to the snow on local streets. He asks people to refrain from shoveling their sidewalk snow into the street. He warns that roads are narrower and all should slow down and be cautious. Burrows also asks that people not pile up snow in places that would block a driver’s view of a road, intersection or driveway.

Whitman County Pullman

The title of Washington Junior Miss went to Marilee Jolin of South Whidbey Island on Saturday night in Pullman’s Gladish Community Center auditorium. The first runner-up award went to Christina Rea of Clarkston. Gillian Campbell of Pullman received third runner-up honors, a creative and performing arts award and the spirit award. More than $11,000 in scholarships was awarded.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Heyburn State Park annual passports can be purchased for $25 through January at headquarters on Chatcolet Road or at the north region office of Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation in Coeur d’Alene. The pass is good for a year’s entrance fees for one motor vehicle. Additional vehicles registered to the same address can be purchased for $10.

Bonner County Sandpoint

The Lake Pend Oreille School District Board of Trustees will discuss the proposed DaVinci Academy charter school during a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sandpoint High School. The meeting is open to the public but comments won’t be heard. Extension of the deadline to approve the decision will be discussed.

Boundary County Naples

A $2,118 emergency generator was donated to the Naples Fire Station 2 in the Deep Creek area for a backup power system. Rob and Gene Shappell, owners of N.W. Energy, donated it so volunteers would be warm during frequent power outages.

Kootenai County Post Falls

The Idaho Small Business Development Center will hold a 12-session class for small business owners or managers. The class, called NexLevel Entrepreneurial Training Program, is designed for skills acquisition to expand an existing business. Registration of $149 is due Feb. 4 for classes held 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Feb. 8 at the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center, 525 W. Clearwater Loop, Post Falls.

Latah County Moscow

The Moscow Junior High School Associated Student Body recently donated $812 to the community’s proposed skate park. The student body raised the money through a benefit dance, which about 280 students attended. The school’s student council decided to match the donation. The proposed 7,000-square-foot park is to be built this spring for about $90,000.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Silver Valley officials are asking residents to shovel snow from the sidewalks and driveways into their yards. “Shoveling snow into city streets is illegal,” according to Mayor Roger Mangum, “and as a last resort the city has the option to fine people for doing it.”

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

A German shepherd named Annie is the newest member of the Libby Police Department. Officer Scott Hutchings told the City Council he’s getting along fine with his new drug-sniffing partner. A Kalispell officer who trains dogs offered Annie to the Libby department for $2,500, payable when the money becomes available. Annie comes from European stock and is worth about $7,000. Local veterinarian Doug Griffiths has donated vaccinations.
