Cda School Board Oks Teachers Contract

From Staff

The Coeur d’Alene School Board unanimously approved the 1999-2000 contract with its teachers during a special meeting Friday morning.

This brings to an end a five-month impasse between the district and its teachers that included three teacher rallies, two rejected offers and a mediation session.

“It was an extended process that I’m sure put a burden on those involved,” said board Chairwoman Wanda Quinn.

What finally resolved the matter was a fact-finder’s report, issued last week. The fact-finder, who was appointed by state schools Superintendent of Marilyn Howard, sided with the district’s second offer, which included a 3.88 percent increase in base salary. The district’s first offer included a 3.09 percent increase in base pay.

The teachers union ratified the contract Tuesday night.

Because the contract is retroactive to September, teachers will see the raise reflected in their February paycheck and will receive a separate check for back pay.

Negotiations for the 2000-2001 contract will begin in a few months.
