Tent Schools

Schoolchildren file out of their tent classroom for a lunch break in the earthquake hit western Turkish city of Duzce. Only three of the 87 schools in Duzce survived the quakes that devasted northwestern Turkey in August and November and most classes are now in tents, most without electricity and some with no access to water. But going back to school has brought back something of a normal life and given the children and their parents a routine after months of idleness. “We like being back,” said 13-year-old Hacer Oncer, warming her hands before the single gas heater during recess. More than 18,000 people died in the two temblors.
