Othello

Columbia Colstor will construct a new 170,000-square-foot frozen food facility in Othello starting in March. The company says it needs more storage capacity because yields are increasing, despite low prices. The facility will employ up to 40 people.

Ferry County

Republic

Researchers reviewing county public documents will have to do so on a limited basis. Due to staff and budget shortfalls, commissioners’ office records are only available to the public on Wednesdays and Thursdays during business hours. An appointment must be made to review audio tapes.

Grant County

Moses Lake

The City Council will officially support Pacific Rim Ethanol’s request to tap into city water and sewer services. To get services to the proposed plant, three miles from city limits, the city must spend over $1 million. Officials are applying for a grant to help defray costs.

Lincoln County

Odessa

The first grinder pumps on the city’s new sewer system are now functioning. That’s good news to the nearly 900 citizens who are officially off the septic system. Grinder pumps are installed at sewer hookups where basement-level drains or sewage outlets are below the sewer main.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

The number of Newport city councilmen who’ve resigned in recent months is noticeable. The latest exit was made by Fred Anderson, who is moving. Ted Holden resigned last week. The city is taking applications for those interested in serving as a council member.

Spokane County

Cheney

Cheney has added a twist to the town meeting. Using a conference call, citizens can get biweekly updates from district Sen. Larry Sheahan and Reps. Mark Schoesler and Don Cox. Residents can also ask questions and share comments. The next Legislative Hotline calls will be Feb. 11 and 25.

Stevens County

The Spokane Tribe of Indians Department of Health and Human Services is holding its annual health fair 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 28 at the Spokane Tribal Center. Activities include a fun run, tiny tot run and a free lunch. There will be booths on elder care, diabetes and domestic violence.

Whitman County

Washington State University opens its Washington Center for Asphalt Technology on Tuesday. A three-day seminar on asphalt technology is planned for private and public sector officials from Washington Department of Transportation and the asphalt industry. These groups gave cash and equipment to make the new laboratory possible.

City Councilman Jerry Wicks was appointed to the library board Wicks was elected to the council in November, replacing Warren Chadbourne.

Bonner County

Hope

Sasha Warlow, a 16-year old Hope resident, won the slalom and giant slalom competitions during a Pacific Northwest Ski Association Junior Olympic qualifier at Stevens Pass. The event was the first race in a series of three that selects athletes to participate in the Western Region Junior Olympics.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County School District Board of Trustees voted for the construction of a new one-way bus lane at Bonners Ferry High School. The lane will make bus access onto the highway easier and should ease traffic congestion. The estimated cost to build the lane is $6,000.

Kootenai County

Coeur d’Alene

A new youth program titled X-Plor, funded by a $82,000 grant from Health and Welfare, will offer art, karate, music, drama, gymnastics, fencing, kickboxing and other activities throughout the school year. The program is held 3-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Canfield Middle School, Wednesdays at Woodland and Thursdays at Lakes Middle School starting this week.

Latah County

Moscow

Latah County commissioners voted against amending the building code to a stricter snow load requirement for manufactured homes. Commissioners Sam Duncan and Paul Kimmell voted against the amendment and chairwoman Loreca Stauber voted for it.

Shoshone County

Kellogg

Both Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain ski resorts are reporting great snow conditions and an increase in the number of visitors over the beginning of the season. Lookout Pass reported 84 inches of snow at its base and 127 inches at its summit. Silver Mountain reported 83 inches at the base and 92 inches at the summit.

Libby

The Libby School board approved Russ Thompson as assistant coach for the high school’s softball team and Melissa Bentley as a Title I English, reading and/or math teacher for the high school. Superintendent Kirby Maki said 15 applications for the high school principal position were received and a screening team will be formed.
