Olympics Exhibit In Park This Weekend

A traveling exhibit on the summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, is bringing a slice of the Down Under to the central meadow of Riverfront Park this weekend.

The exhibit includes a five-story inflatable replica of the Sydney Opera House and a free interactive ride that takes participants on a virtual tour of Australia.

The exhibit opens Friday and runs through Sunday. Dates listed in Tuesday’s Spokesman-Review were incorrect.

The Down Under Tour is intended to promote interest in the 2000 Summer Olympic games for those unable to attend, said Mary Kelley, a spokeswoman for Bank of America, which is sponsoring the exhibit.

On Friday the exhibit opens at 10 a.m. for area schoolchildren. Fourtime Olympic gold medalist in swimming, Jon Olsen, and a didgeridoo musician will be on hand. The exhibit opens for the public from 5-9 p.m. Friday.

Nine young Australian “ambassadors” will answer questions about their country, and an aboriginal face painter will be available for children. The exhibit also includes a rock climbing wall.

The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Spokane is the final Northwest stop on the exhibit tour of 48 American cities.
