WASHINGTON
Adams County Othello
Judge Charlotte DuBois may never make syndication, but she’s happy nonetheless. DuBois and the defendants at Othello District Court can be seen live on television in jails and detention centers throughout the area. The $60,000 television system allows the judge to arraign prisoners in the Adams County Jail in Ritzville and juveniles in Martin Hall in Spokane County without the county footing the price of transport. A round trip from Martin Hall takes nearly eight hours, including court time.
Ferry County Curlew
Citizens who live along Curlew Lake are invited to the annual Curlew Lake Association meeting. This year’s agenda includes a financial report, election of officers, a report on grant status and discussion of continuing direction and focus. The event is at Curlew Lake State Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, when a potluck will begin.
Grant County Smyrna
This is Ryan Stewart’s favorite time of year - rodeo season. The recent Royal City High School grad is also the Washington State High School Rodeo all-around cowboy. He snagged the title in June by earning champion titles in calf roping and team roping. Stewart practices nearly four hours each day on his family’s ranch. Each member of the family, including his mom, Susie, and sister, Katie, is a roper. Stewart will compete in college rodeo at Central Washington University.
Lincoln County Almira
The town of Almira’s pit bull ordinance was upheld in Lincoln County Superior Court recently when resident Bud Swears was ordered to pay $719 to the city for owning one of the dogs within city limits.
Pend Oreille County Newport
County Commissioner Joel Jacobsen has paid his $75 fine for illegal burning. The commissioner, a landowner, was cited in April for burning in violation of the county ordinance. Jacobsen did have a permit, but it was for a 4-foot-by-4-foot area. A special permit was needed to burn the half-acre he had aflame. Jacobsen challenged the validity of the burning ordinance, but, in the end, did not dispute the fine.
Spokane County Spokane
Seahawks fans can see the football team for free July 30 when Eastern Washington University hosts the EWU/ Seahawks Extravaganza and Scrimmage. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the university will present Seahawks activities in the central mall, including a talk by Coach Mike Holmgren and a chance to meet the Seagals cheerleaders. Stevens County Colville
Volunteers are needed at the Stevens County Museum. With tourism in full swing and visitors coming in a near steady stream, the skeleton crew of historical society folks and other volunteers could really use a hand. Volunteers can choose between a 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. morning shift, and a 1 to 4 p.m. day shift. The Fire Lookout Tower that was moved to the Keller Park grounds also needs a daily volunteer for a three-hour shift. To volunteer, call (509) 684-5968.
Whitman County Pullman
The Washington State University regents meet today in Seattle and will hear a variety of reports, including a strategic planning overview by WSU President Lane Rawlins. The regents will review operating budget requests and take action on a range of academic affairs items, including extending several academic programs and finalizing faculty manual changes on promotion and tenure guidelines. The regents are also likely to approve establishing two new degrees - a master’s of science in agriculture and a master’s in teaching at WSU Pullman.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
The annual BetterCare Memorial Walk is set to begin 6 p.m. Friday at the Central Park football field. The walk was started by a group of Benewah Community Hospital employees four years ago to help raise money for hospital improvements. Teams collect contributions in memory of friends or loved ones and walk all night around the football field. Candles can be purchased for $10 in memory of a loved one and will be lighted at 10 p.m. during the memorial ceremony.
Bonner County Sandpoint
A proposal to expand the waste collection site to accommodate roll-off containers for commercial waste will be considered by the Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday. The pubic hearing is set for 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse, 215 S. First Ave. The County’s Public Works Department is proposing to expand the site about six miles south of Sandpoint at Dufort Road and U.S. Highway 95.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Tessie Sauget is Boundary Community Hospital’s Employee of the Month. She is a CNA in the Extended Care Facility and has been with the facility for a year and a half. In her time off Sauget spends time with her daughters and grandson and returns to the facility to help to feed residents.
Kootenai County Rathdrum
The Westwood Historical Society is encouraging anyone with old pictures of family, people or landmarks in the area to bring them from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday to the society’s Rathdrum Days booth at Lakeland High School. The Society has borrowed a camera from the Museum of North Idaho to copy the photos, along with names and dates, to use as records for the museum and historical society. The society is looking for pictures of the old Mountain Resort and wants to find the longest-living resident in Rathdrum. For more information, call Bev Young at 668-1814.
Latah County Moscow
Leanne Eggert, a Washington State University College of Veterinary student, is trying to start an organization in Moscow to spay and neuter wild cats in the area. A meeting will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital Room No. 1410. The free service would provide traps to catch the cats, vaccination for rabies and treatment for ear mites. After a cat is treated it would be ear-marked. Eggert’s goal is not only to control the population without euthanizing them, but also to make sure the wild cats are healthy and not spreading feline diseases. Shoshone County Kellogg
Tutors and mentors are needed from September 2000 to August 2001 to serve in Head Start Centers, elementary, middle and high schools, colleges, universities, learning centers and prisons throughout the state. The Idaho Trio AmeriCorps is looking for part-time and full-time helpers. Part-time helpers serve 900 hours, receive a $4,765 living allowance and a $2,363 education award. Lincoln County Libby
Rick Maedje has withdrawn as the Republican candidate for county commissioner following a challenge that he does not meet the two-year residency requirement. Maedje has stated he is eligible and qualified for the office but it would be expensive to fight the challenge legally and that disposition of the matter probably wouldn’t be settled until after the November general election.
