Triple Play Loaded With Fun

Nils Rosdahl The Spokesman-Rev

Those seeking even more to do than the activities provided by all of North Idaho’s outdoor amenities have a new option.

Triple Play, a new indoor entertainment center in Hayden, opens this weekend.

A 72,000-square-foot facility on eight acres at Highway 95 and Orchard Avenue, Triple Play offers activities for all ages and abilities. Its open house is 4-8 p.m. Friday, and the first open day is Saturday.

Here’s what’s there and what will be there as construction continues through the fall:

The first level, with easiest access on the east side of the two-level parking lot, features a nine-hole miniature golf course complete with several water hazards with rock boundaries, a waterfall and a cave.

Adjacent is a large entertainment arcade with nonviolent video games and a prize-redemption center.

Along the east wall, with viewing from both floors of the building, are a three-level, soft-climb play unit (with colorful tubes, slides and other features) and a four-sided, 16-foot climbing tower. The lower level also has a laser-tag room, three party rooms and a restaurant.

A 20-lane bowling alley dominates the second level. Two lanes are outfitted for duck pin bowling. These lanes are standard size, but the balls are about one-third the size of regular bowling balls and don’t have finger holes. Adult bowlers cradle the ball in their palms, while children often use two hands to roll the ball. The pins are squattier and spaced farther apart. Special return systems and racks accommodate the smaller bowling balls.

The east side of the complex will feature a 32,000-square-foot white, inflatable nylon dome, supported by cables. The 45-foot-high dome will include an eight-stall golf driving range, batting cages, two indoor soccer arenas and a 36-foot climbing wall.

Restaurants include a pizzeria and a fresh salad and grill cafe. Seating is in booths and at tables. Beer and wine will be available. Triple Play will have about 70 employees.

A special feature is the decorating. Walls on both levels display full-length murals of North Idaho scenes in which the “action” changes with black-light effects. Artists are John Jennings and Judy Minter.

The complex, all handicap accessible, has more than 200 parking spaces. The site includes pads for free-standing buildings. One already houses a new KFC restaurant.

John Geddes, who earned his sporting start by washing golf clubs at Hayden Lake Country Club, is general manager and spokesman for a small group of local owners. Geddes, 37, graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and law school at Brigham Young University. He has practiced law in Coeur d’Alene for 10 years.

“The concept is to provide good, clean fun all year for all ages,” Geddes said. “We’ll offer private parties, tournaments and special events in cooperation with other businesses, such as Silverwood and Super 1 Foods. We developed this facility for a year and a half.” Facilities will be open for fund-raisers and business after-hour events.

The architectural firm was G.D. Longwell Architects of Hayden, and builder was Ginno Construction of Coeur d’Alene.

Triple Play hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays. Phone 762-PLAY (7529).

Another new business, located at the northwest corner of Orchard Avenue and Government Way, is North Idaho Masonry & Hardscape Center.

Officially opening Monday in a 3,000-square-foot building and two-acre supply yard, the company offers a full range of bricks, blocks, stones and pavers for all types of special indoor touches and outdoor construction and landscaping.

Projects can include floors, fireplaces, hearths, counters, walls, water features, benches, barbecues, driveways and retaining walls. Sales are to private buyers and contractors, and buyers can be referred to installers.

Many of the company’s stone and block products are from the Northwest. Items include flagstone, shale, columnar basalt, stone veneers, blocks and glass brick.

Owners are Greg and Janet Brett of Spokane, where he has 26 years’ experience in masonry and landscaping. Ken Brickey is masonry specialist, and Kelly Enders is office manager for six employees. Both have been with related businesses for many years.

The business will offer classes throughout the year, with a paver demonstration planned for 10 a.m. this Saturday. Business hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Phone 772-8480.
