Obituaries

Dorothy Gooby Sandpoint

Vigil service for Dorothy Frances Gooby, 83, will be today at 7 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Burial Mass will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Sandpoint. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Hospital in Sandpoint.

Born on a dairy farm near Sandpoint, Mrs. Gooby died Saturday.

She was a founder of Gooby and Sons Meat Co., in Sandpoint. Mrs. Gooby also was a homemaker and traveled extensively, including trips to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Greece and the Holy Land. She had spent five winters in Arizona.

She was active with the Sandpoint Lions Club, the American Association of Retired Persons chapter and served as secretary for the Sandpoint Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil.

Survivors include four children, Marilyn Madsen, and Robert, Richard, and Patrick Gooby; a sister, Irene Hudon; her twin brother, John Hudon; nine grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sandpoint Lions Club or the Sandpoint Senior Citizens.

Katherine Tappen Spokane

Memorial service for Katherine F. “Kitty” Tappen, 65, will be at 3 p.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pinehurst, Idaho. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tappen, who was born in Opportunity, died July 5.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Doc Symons of Athol, Idaho, and Joe Symons of Nevada; and two daughters, Francis Galloway of Athol and Blanche Poss of Portland.

Mary Anne Kolbar Spokane

Visitation for Mary Anne Kolbar, 81, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Kolbar, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Sunday. She was a 50-year Spokane resident.

She graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1937, and married Edward Kolbar in 1939.

Mrs. Kolbar was a waitress in the Coeur d’Alene Ice Cream Parlor and later worked for Alcoa Aluminum in the Spokane Industrial Park as a catcher on the table saw for the Naval Supply Depot.

Mrs. Kolbar moved to Camp Roberts in California to be close to her brother during the war, where she worked as a driver and typist. She also assisted in camp functions such as food distribution, mail delivery and church maintenance.

After the war, she moved back to Spokane and helped her husband in the development of his general contracting business.

She was a active in the Parent Teacher Association and received the Acorn Award in 1962.

Her husband died in 1984.

Survivors include two sons, George and Leonard Kolbar, both of Spokane; and two sisters, Ivy Irons and Mellissa Loomis, both of Coeur d’Alene.

Bruce LeClaire Spokane

No service will be held for Bruce H. LeClaire, 65. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Trentwood. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. LeClaire, who died Tuesday, was born in Skanee, Mich.

He was a 50-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include two brothers, Gerald LeClaire of Spokane and Rodney LeClaire of Auburn, Wash.; and two sisters, Patricia Ostin and Donna Willms, both of Spokane.

James `Andy’ Melton Priest River, Idaho

Memorial service for James Anderson “Andy” Melton, 28, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Boundary County Fairgrounds in Bonners Ferry. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Melton, who was born in Libby, Mont., drowned July 2 in Sandpoint.

Mr. Melton grew up and attended schools in Libby, and later worked trail systems for the Forest Service. He also was a logger.

He had lived in various areas of North Idaho, including Naples and Post Falls, and recently Priest River.

Survivors include three children, Tracy , James Jr., and Isaac, all of Elko, Nev.; his mother, Elizabeth Melton of Naples, and his father, Frankie Melton of Libby; two sisters, Donna Burkett of Libby and Annette Reeves of New York City; four brothers, Mark Jones of Colorado, Shawn Lee of California, Jimmy Melton of Libby, and Edmund Jones of Washington state; and his grandmother, Oneta Jones of California.

Rose Johnson Coeur d’Alene

Service for Rose A. Johnson, 72, was Wednesday at Boswell Hall/Schuler Auditorium at North Idaho College. Graveside service followed at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Miss Johnson, who was born in Oakesdale, Wash., died Sunday.

She lived in Bonners Ferry and Boise, before settling in Coeur d’Alene in 1945. She graduated in 1946 from Coeur d’Alene High School.

Miss Johnson received a registered nursing degree in 1950 from St. Luke’s School of Nursing. She began working in Christian ministry in 1952, serving in various areas of Washington state. She moved to Hawaii in 1984, and to California in 1989. She returned to Washington in 1998 and recently moved to Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include a sister, Florence Sylvester of Spokane; a brother, Vern Johnson of Coeur d’Alene; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Ida `Jean’ Johannes Kjos Rathdrum, Idaho

Memorial service for Ida Jean Johannes Kjos, 60, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Family Worship Center in Hayden Lake, Idaho. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kjos, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

She had lived in Spokane for nearly 30 years, and in Libby, Mont., before settling in Rathdrum in 1976.

She was a homemaker and gardener.

Survivors include three sons, Rich and Timmy Kjos, both of Rathdrum, and Danny Kjos of Post Falls; her mother, Gladys Johannes of Spokane; two brothers, Jim and Phil Johannes, both of Spokane; two sisters, Phyllis Porter of Spokane, and Charlotte Jones of Newport, Wash.; three grandchildren and numerous foster children.

Hubert Sammons Spokane

No service will be held for Hubert E. Sammons, 72. Burial will be at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sammons, who was born in Webb, W.Va., died Saturday. He was a 50-year Spokane resident.

He worked as a truck driver.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas and Shawn; a daughter, Jodi; two brothers, Tom and Calvin; and a sister, Ollie.

Henry Deaton Jr. Osburn, Idaho

No service will be held for Henry Briton Deaton Jr., 75, at his request. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Deaton, who was born in Muskogee, Okla., died Friday.

He served with the Navy during World War II and married Susan Steinko in 1965.

The couple lived in California for several years and he worked as a certified public accountant in San Francisco before moving to Osburn in 1969.

Mr. Deaton formed an accounting partnership business with Steve Anderson in the 1970s and operated offices in Coeur d’Alene and Osburn.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Candace Deaton of Coeur d’Alene; two sons, Ken Deaton of Pocatello, Idaho, and Britt Deaton of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Mary Dini of Redwood City; a stepsister, Billye Harris of Oklahoma; one grandson and two stepgranddaughters.

Charles Walker Medimont, Idaho

A potluck gathering for Charles Lee Walker, 78, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the family home at 29418 State Highway 3 in Medimont. Private committal of ashes will be at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Walker, who was born in Pendleton, Ore., died Monday.

He moved to LaGrande, Ore., in 1925 and graduated from high school there in 1939. He served with the Navy in the Asian-Pacific Theater during World War II.

After his military service, Mr. Walker moved to Medimont in 1946 and married Patsy Harlan in 1948. The couple settled in Wallace, where Mr. Walker worked as a yard leadman for Hecla Mining for 25 years, retiring in 1973.

Mr. Walker returned to Medimont after his retirement and worked part-time as a farmer, logger and wood craftsman.

He flew airplanes as a young man and was active in fishing and was past master of the Medicine Mountain Grange at Medimont.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James Walker of Medimont; a daughter, Margaret Yuhas of Montana; a brother, James Walker of Beaverton, Ore.; two sisters, Barbara Gaylord of Kellogg and Sarah Wormuth of New York; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Edward Skelly Jr. Sandpoint

Private family service for Edward G. Skelly Jr., 86, will be held. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Skelly, who was born in Oakland, Calif., died Saturday.

He moved to Glendale, Calif., in 1920 and attended school there. He also attended two years of junior college.

Mr. Skelly had worked for the Forest Service in the 1930s and married Eryma Taft in 1943. He then worked for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Mountain Battalion.

He retired as a captain from the L.A. County Fire Department after 30 years of service, and moved to the Sandpoint area.

Mr. Skelly was a mechanic, and a member of the Masonic Lodge 42 and the Shriners.

He was active in boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Susan Greer of Fresno, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Wendy and Kari.

Mabel Dorn-Pohanic Post Falls

Memorial service for Mabel M. Dorn-Pohanic, 84, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Camelot Estates Clubhouse in Post Falls. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Bonners Ferry, Mrs. Dorn-Pohanic died Monday.

She lived in Bonners Ferry and in 1934 married Merton Dorn. They moved to San Jose, Calif., where they owned a small restaurant, until the mid-1940s.

They moved to Spokane in the 1950s and entered the home-building business. They later settled in Reno, Nev., and managed a motel for 20 years.

They moved to Coeur d’Alene. Her husband died in 1979.

In 1986 she married Michael Pohanic. They lived in Arizona. He died in 1993.

She moved to Post Falls after her husband’s death to be near family.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Libera `Lee’ Monus Hayden, Idaho

Memorial service for Libera N. “Lee” Monus, 98, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Living Word Presbyterian Church in Athol, Idaho. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Monus, who was born in Bronx N.Y., died July 6.

She married Lawrence Monus in 1936 and the couple moved to Redwood City, Calif., in 1945.

She moved to the Hayden area in 1994, and was a homemaker. She attended the Athol Presbyterian Church.

Her husband died in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Larry Monus of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Charles Nardone of Florida; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Harold Carlson Hayden, Idaho

An open house in memory of Harold P. Carlson, 88, will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at his daughter’s home at 165 Dart St., in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carlson, who was born in North Dakota, died Saturday.

He married Sigrid Hansen in 1936 and they lived in Montana until settling in the Hayden area in 1952.

Mr. Carlson worked for Northwest Timber and for the Potlatch Corp until retiring in 1973. He was active in metal detecting.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Pat Gant of Post Falls and Joan Wilson of Spokane; a sister, Eleanor Turner of California; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
