Benzel Beaten By ‘98 Champ

Ryan Benzel of Ritzville Golf Course lost to 1998 champion Jeff Quinney during Thursday’s play of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s 99th men’s amateur championship at Bandon, Ore.

Quinney, of Eugene (Ore.) Country Club, topped Benzel 3 and 2 to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

Benzel opened by defeating Court Watson of Quilchena Golf Course 1-up. Also during morning play, Alex Rodger of Canyon Crest Golf Course defeated Mike McPherson of Colfax Golf and Country Club 5 and 4.

Bonners Ferry’s Sarah Walter lost in the quarterfinals of the PNGA’s 99th women’s amateur championship at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle.

Walter, of Mirror Lake Golf Course, lost to Molly Cooper of Tacoma Golf and Country Club 2 and 1. Cooper, who won the Washington State Golf Association’s women’s amateur in June, knocked off two-time defending champion Jerilyn White of McNary (Ore.) Golf Course 1-up in the semifinals.

The team of Rodger Vingelen, Roger Bellerive, Paul Christianson, Rick Sorenson and professional Mark Gardner won the Bank of America Pro-Am, a preliminary to the Rosauers Open at Indian Canyon Golf Course.

The team finished at 228, three strokes ahead of the field. Clint Wallman, with an 8-under-par 64, had the top score among pros.

The Rosauers Open begins today.

Baseball

Dan Thigpen struck out 11 and Dave Warren singled home the winning run in the seventh inning to lead the Northstars to a 2-1 win over the Pullman Patriots in the first game of a Senior American Legion double-header sweep at Jackson Field… . Mike Kuck hit a two-run homer and earned the save in the second game, an 8-6 Northstars decision. The Northstars (12-6) took a one-game lead over the idle Northwest Athletics Blue Devils (10-6) with the season down to the last three days.

Adam Oakley limited Tacoma to a first-inning bloop single and the 18-U Spokane Heat (27-12) recorded a five-inning, 10-0 win at the Duster Bowl Tournament at Kennewick. Oakley (7-0) struck out 11.
