Going Back To Seven Digits
The proliferation of area codes means callers sometimes have to dial far more than seven digits to reach nearby friends and businesses.
Now, a Texas telecommunications engineer is pitching his “System Beta” plan that would restore seven-digit dialing. The system would also let users have just two phone numbers - one each for home and office - for a variety of telecom devices.
So far, however, the phone industry isn’t biting.

* Bit inflation: The two components of the Wintel juggernaut — Microsoft and Intel — have teamed up again.
This time, they’ve created a version of the Windows operating system that runs on the next generation of Intel microprocessors.
Intel’s new “Itanium” processors will be able to crunch binary numbers that are 64 digits long, or double the current capacity of 32.
Still, it’s an open question whether consumers will embrace the 64-bit systems.
