‘Shaft’ Hip And Entertaining
“Shaft” (Rated R) is an energetic, funny and all-out intense film that fully uses all of Samuel Jackson’s acting talents. It’s the summer’s first truly A-caliber film.
Like the original “Shaft” movies, the story line may seem spotty and overdone at times, but it’s so involving and fun that mistakes are easily overlooked. Each scene mixes the right amount of humor, action and intensity. Even after two hours of explosions and fights, you crave more. Sequel, anyone?
Perhaps the best part of “Shaft” is Shaft himself and the surrounding characters. Jackson is so good in the role. He is Shaft. Capable actors such as Christian Bale and Toni Collette add diversity and intrigue to the film, while rapper Busta Rhymes almost steals the show from Jackson with his outrageous performance as one of Shaft’s many acquaintances.
If even great performances and a high-octane feel aren’t sure signs of a winner, add an amazing soundtrack and an intense clash between good and bad - the foundation of any adventure.
“Shaft” is as hip and entertaining as any summer film in years. It gets better each time a punk takes a beating.
What’s his name? Shaft.
