Andon `Andy’ Manolis Spokane

Memorial service for Andon G. “Andy” Manolis, 76, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Spokane Valley Elks Lodge. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr.

Manolis died Wednesday.

He graduated in 1941 from Spangle High School, and later from the School of Pharmacy at Washington State University.

Mr. Manolis sold pharmaceuticals to Spokane-area drug stores. He then worked as a dispatcher for 33 years for Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads.

He served on the board of directors of the Spokane Guilds’ School for approximately three years.

He was a past master of Audubon Park Masonic Lodge No. 272 and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, York Rite Bodies, El Katif Shrine and affiliated orders. He also was a member of the Model Railroad and Morse Code clubs and was a past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Elberta; two daughters, Penny Clemons of Cheney and Ruby Adams of Renton, Wash.; four stepsons, Thomas, Larry and Herbert Upchurch, and Eric Simonson, all of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Castle of Spokane and Carol Simonson of Kent, Wash.; a brother, James Manolis of Clarkston, Wash.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Guilds’ School.

Edna Dewey Wallace

Graveside service for Edna M. Dewey, 93, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shoshone Memorial Gardens with a celebration of life to follow. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dewey, who was born in St. John, Wash., died Monday.

She was a Silver Valley pioneer, homemaker and 64-year Wallace resident.

Mrs. Dewey was preceded in death by her husband, Vance.

Survivors include two sons, Ferman Pasold of Twin Lakes, Idaho, and David Pasold of Anchorage, Alaska; four grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallace Senior Center.

Alta (Baker) Bell Vancouver, Wash.

Service for Alta Opal (Baker) Bell, a former longtime Spokane resident, will be at 3 p.m. today at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Vancouver. Graveside service will be Tuesday at Sunnyside Cemetery in Savoy, Texas.

Mrs. Bell, 99, died Tuesday. She was born in Savoy.

In 1919 she married Arthur Bell.

She was a homemaker.

Shortly after her husband died in 1952, she moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Bell later worked as a hotel maid.

She moved to Vancouver three years ago.

Survivors include two children, Elbridge Bell and Clara Nixon; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Lydia Behr Spokane

Graveside service for Lydia E. Behr, 85, will be at 10 a.m. today at Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley, Idaho. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Behr, who was born in Kimama, Idaho, died Monday.

She and her husband, Lewis, moved to Spokane in 1945 from the Burley area.

Mrs. Behr was a cook and waitress. She had worked for the Felts Field Cafe, the Parkwater Cafe and the Big Rig Truck Stop.

Her husband died in June.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Lang of Spokane; a son, Don Behr of Orlando, Fla; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Donald Mitchell Spokane

Memorial service and potluck dinner for Donald R. Mitchell, 63, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Little Joe’s Tavern in Airway Heights. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mitchell, who was born in Kermit, Texas, died Wednesday.

He moved to Spokane in 1974 and worked as a caretaker at Lakeland Village in Medical Lake.

Survivors include three sons, Donald Mitchell Jr. of Airway Heights, and Larry and Timothy Mitchell, both of San Angelo, Texas; two daughters, Cindy Luther of San Angelo and Diane Onofry of Albany, La.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Clarence `Curly’ Birr Colfax, Wash.

Service for Clarence James “Curly” Birr, 81, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Mr. Birr died Wednesday.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and moved to the Pacific Northwest.

In 1940 he married Geraldine “Gerry” Stratton.

Mr. Birr worked in the dairy business for Milky Way and Arden Farms dairies in Pullman for 11 years.

In 1958 his family moved to Colfax. He became manager of the Arden Farms Dairy office. After retiring from Arden Farms he began working for R&H Machine. He retired again in 1982 after 10 years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Colfax.

Mr. Birr is survived by his wife; three daughters, Connie Lowe of Potomac, Md., Kathy Helt of Tacoma and Susie Christopher of Moscow, Idaho; two sons, Leslie Birr of Colfax and Denny Birr of Sunnyside, Wash.; one sister and four brothers, all of Toledo; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

George Dunsmore Silverton, Idaho

Memorial service for George Clifford Dunsmore, 96, will be 7 p.m. Sunday at the Pinehurst, Idaho, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dunsmore, who died Wednesday, was born in Stanford, Mont.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1923 from Montana and married Gladys Grenfell in 1925.

He worked on the track crew at Bunker Hill Mining Co. until retiring in 1968. He had also worked at the Sunshine Mine and was a logger.

Mr. Dunsmore was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys.

Survivors include four daughters, Lois Dunsmore, Betty Shipp and Tina Septer, all of Kellogg, and Mildred Hovland of Coeur d’Alene; a son, Charles Dunsmore of Waldport, Ore.; two sisters, Mary Ellen Hand of Hayden, Idaho, and Edith Bush of Moses Lake; 24 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 14 great-greatgrandchildren.

Hiram Everest Bellevue, Wash.

Service for Hiram Augustus Everest, a former longtime Spokane resident, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at King of King’s Lutheran Church in Renton, Wash. American Memorial in Renton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Everest, who died Tuesday, was 85. He was born in Grangeville, Idaho.

He and his wife, Rachel, moved to Spokane from Grangeville in 1952.

Mr. Everest was a real estate broker in Spokane and operated H.A. Everest Co. with his wife.

He was a member of the Washington Association of Realtors, which he served as state president in 1972. He also was a member of the El Katif Shrine.

Mr. Everest moved to Bellevue two years ago.

His wife of 62 years died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Bradley Everest of San Antonio; two daughters, Barbara Sather of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Peggy Parker-Viall of Kent, Wash.; two sisters, Ruth Lewis of Roseburg, Ore., and Helen Douglas of San Rafael, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Donald Reichert Spokane

Service for Donald D. Reichert, 40, will be at 3 p.m. today at HennesseySmith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Reichert died Sunday.

He worked as a laborer for Western Concrete.

Survivors include a son, Zachary of Spokane; his parents, Donald Reichert and Thelma McGuire, both of Spokane; a sister, Therresa Clemons of Spokane; and his grandparents, Lorraine Reichert, Gwen and Mac McFetridge, and Ingeborg Tollesfsen, all of Spokane.

John Hilborn Chewelah, Wash.

Memorial service for John R. Hilborn, 95, will be at 11 a.m. today at Faith Community Church in Chewelah. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Portal, N.D., Mr. Hilborn died Saturday.

He was a farmer and worked for the railroad before riding the rails to Spokane in 1934.

Mr. Hilborn worked on farms in Amber and Cheney. He moved to Wilbur, Wash., in 1941 to work on the Sheffels Ranch.

In 1946 he moved his family back to Spokane and then worked in maintenance at Fort Wright and Fairchild Air Force Base. He retired in 1967.

Mr. Hilborn later lived in Nine Mile Falls and the Cascade Mobile Home Park before moving to Chewelah in 1986.

He was a member of Faith Community Church.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Stella; a daughter, Dotty Valkenaar of Post Falls; a sister, Sally Barron of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

Arlene Lucas Spokane

Viewing for Arlene Francis Lucas, 67, will be from noon to 5 p.m. Monday at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Spokane. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Lucas, who was born in Hartford, Conn., died Thursday.

She grew up in Connecticut and moved to Florida as a young adult and settled in Spokane in 1968.

She was a homemaker and worked in concessions at the Spokane Indians ballpark.

She was an accomplished musician, songwriter and vocalist and was active in outdoor recreation and fishing.

Survivors include four sons, Jim Lucas and Matthew Chambers, both of Spokane, and Scott and Neal Lucas, both of California; and four daughters, Joanne Lucas of Florida, Nancy Yamaura and Janet Lucas, both of Spokane, and Amy Lucas of Post Falls.

Carol Matthews Spokane

No service will be held for Carol E. Matthews at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Matthews died Wednesday. She was 71.

She was a lifetime Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Her husband, Marvin, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, John Matthews of Spokane; two daughters, Barbara Kirwin of Spokane and Dana Taylor of Salem, Ore.; a sister, Connie Forkner, and a brother, Paul Quam, both of Spokane; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dora (McQuarie) Wieber Spokane

Private graveside service for Dora E. (McQuarie) Wieber, 78, will be held at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 51-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Wieber died Wednesday.

She was born in Entiat, Wash., where she graduated from high school.

In 1969 she married Charles Wieber.

Mrs. Wieber worked as a cook for the Central Valley School District for 23 years.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Larry and Douglas Wieber, both of Spokane, and Joe O’Neal of Arizona; a daughter, Kathy Nyman of Kennewick; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jessica Haynes Kettle Falls, Wash.

Service for Jessica Haynes, 16, will be at 11 a.m. today at Columbia River Bible Church in Kettle Falls. Graveside service will follow at the Meyers Falls Cemetery in Kettle Falls. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Jessica died Monday from injuries suffered in a car accident near Kettle Falls.

She attended Columbia River Christian Academy, where she played volleyball.

Survivors include her mother, Kelle Haynes of Kettle Falls; her father, Farin Denison of Spokane; two brothers, Shelby Simon of Columbus, Mont., and David Di Bernardo of California; two sisters, Elyssa Azar and Hailey Denison, both of Plains, Mont.; her grandparents, Robert and Lucille Haynes of Kettle Falls, Philip Denison of Washington state, and Jean Holland of Colville; and her great-grandmothers, Gladys Haynes of Kettle Falls and Elsie Subasic of Rossland, British Columbia.

Esther Biggs Spokane

Private services will be held for Esther Irene Biggs, 86. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Biggs, who was born in Gresham, Ore., died Monday.

She was a 83-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Her husband, Raymond, died in 1981.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Woodrow of Las Vegas; three sons, Larry and Terry Biggs, both of Spokane, and Michael Biggs of Bremerton; two brothers, Robert and Bill Forbes, both of Spokane; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Esther (Bentley) Peters Burke, Idaho

Memorial service for Esther E. (Bentley), 91, will be Thursday at the Good Samaritan Center in Silverton, Idaho. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peters, who was born in Reardan, Wash., died Wednesday.

She graduated from high school in Montana and later moved to Post Falls.

Mrs. Peters was a homemaker and was active with the Post Falls Presbyterian Church, Kootenai Memorial Hospital Volunteers, the Good Sam Volunteers and various civic and religious organizations.

Her husband of 56 years, Keith, died in 1991.

Survivors include two sons, Don Peters of Burke and Scottie Peters of Fort Benton, Mont.; a brother, Paul Bentley; a sister, Beth Goostrey; eight grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
