Polio Survivors Plan Picnic
Gov. Gary Locke has proclaimed July 30 through Aug. 5 Post Polio Awareness Week, and Polio Outreach of Washington will mark the event with a picnic in Ellensburg.
The picnic will be at Mount View Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 5. Polio survivors and their family and friends are invited.
An estimated 35,000 polio survivors live in Washington state, with more than 2,500 of those in Spokane County. Many polio survivors experience new, disabling symptoms many years after they contracted the disease.
The symptoms include muscle weakness, joint pain, severe fatigue and difficulty with swallowing and breathing. Call (800) 609-5538 for more information.
