Used Instruments Being Collected At ‘Live After 5’
The Spokane Arts Commission will collect donations of used musical instruments during Thursday’s “Live After 5” festival in downtown Spokane. The public is encouraged to donate previously used instruments of all kinds, which will be distributed to area elementary through high school students.
Bring your donations to the Musical Instrument Drive booth near the main staging area at the corner of Wall and Main between 4:30 and 9 p.m. For more information call Susan Hardie at 625-6050.
Call for entries
Portland Art Museum’s Northwest Film Center announces the 27th Northwest Film and Video Festival, a juried survey of moving-image arts by independent Northwest film and videomakers.
Typically, 30 to 45 short features and documentaries are screened during the festival, of which 10 to 15 are selected for the Best of the Northwest touring program which travels the following year throughout the region and beyond to art-house cinemas, museums, arts councils and universities.
Entries are accepted in all genres from permanent residents of Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and British Columbia, as well as from students attending school in those states. Work must have been completed after Aug. 1, 1998, in 1/2-inch VHS, 3/4-inch NTSC, Super 8, 16 mm or 35 mm formats.

Art show
The Loon Lake Historical Society’s First Annual Fine Art Exhibition and Sale will be Aug. 5-6 at the Old Schoolhouse in Loon Lake, Wash.
Featured artists include Steve Belzman, pastels; Ella Farka and Kathleen Grant, watermedia; Ginger Gumm, photography; and Debbie Hughbanks, acrylics. Hours are from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Kudos
Four Spokane County residents are among 73 artists throughout Washington to receive Grants for Artist Projects from Artist Trust, a nonprofit organization that supports artists in all disciplines.
Susan Kwock Kim and Lenae Nofziger received awards in the literary arts category, and Mary Farrell and Lenora Simon Lopez received awards for visual arts.
Applications for the GAP program were received from 487 artists this year, with almost $82,000 in grants awarded.
Classes
Spokane Art School is offering a workshop in cuttlefish casting Aug. 19 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the school, 920 N. Howard. Cuttlefish casting involves using a form carved into a cuttlefish bone to cast simple jewelry-sized pieces. There’s a $30 tuition fee, a $10 lab fee and a $5 registration fee for people who are not art school members. Call 328-0900 for more information or to register.
A Curlicues and Garden Supports Workshop will be offered Aug. 19 from 2-4 p.m. at Bloomers Junction, 6005 N. Idaho Road in Post Falls. Bainbridge Island, Wash., garden artist Lindsay Smith will demonstrate how to bend rebar into whimsical and artful garden sculptures.
