Woman’S Body Found In River

From Staff

A woman’s body was found in the Spokane River early Saturday morning, though the circumstances of her death were unclear, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman’s body was discovered at about 2:30 a.m. near the Argonne Bridge. Deputies have tentatively identified the woman, but did not release her name Saturday, pending an autopsy on Monday.

A couple living just west of the bridge reported hearing a woman’s screams coming from the area of the bridge, according to the sheriff’s office. Minutes later, they reported the screams had stopped, but they could see something in the water. The husband paddled out in a small craft and discovered the woman’s body, deputies said. He towed it to a nearby dock, where a deputy performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was wearing shorts and a blouse, but no shoes. A pair of sandals and eyeglasses were found on the north bank of the river beneath the bridge, but detectives weren’t sure they belonged to the victim.

Detectives found a car about a half-block away with a purse believed to belong to the woman.

There were no apparent signs of foul play, but detectives consider the death suspicious because of the late hour.
