Open burning, including campfires and charcoal, has been banned on Bureau of Land Management land. The use of bottled gas stoves and heaters is permitted, but the area must be barren for at least 10 feet around the stove.

A workshop for girls is set for 1-4 p.m today at the Patterson Park picnic area. Girls ages 5 to 17 will make a decorative plaster mask, and enjoy games, an obstacle course and snacks. Cost for Girl Scouts is $3, with non-Scouts paying $10. Financial aid is available.

Residents are planning fund-raisers for the $300,000 needed to start building a swimming pool. The city has a construction bond for $1.26 million, plus $109,000 cash on hand to build a pool, but the latest bids have come in $300,000 over that.

A new kiosk north of Davenport will help Lake Roosevelt campers. The kiosk, on Highway 25 leading to Fort Spokane, gives information on campgrounds and other places to stay. A National Park Service sign at the junction of Highways 2 and 25 tells whether there is space available at Porcupine Bay and Fort Spokane.

The Wishing Star Foundation raised nearly $2,000 in its first Adventures in Antique Appraisal event last week. The foundation will use the money to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses in Eastern Washington and Idaho.

The City Council saved $40,000 by purchasing recycled plastic tree grates for downtown. The city had planned to buy more expensive cast-iron grates to protect sidewalk trees.

Washington State University hosts the McNair Summer Research Symposium on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in CUB 123-127. The McNair Scholars, who have completed their summer projects, will give their oral and poster presentations. The federally funded McNair program is designed to prepare low-income, first-generation college students to earn doctoral degrees.

Lorin Aswegan, 60, a section foreman at Fernwood and 20-year employee at St. Maries River Railroad, retired recently. He plans to restore a few old John Deere tractors he owns, garden and spend more time with his grandchildren. Aswegan and his wife, Joan, have lived in the area for 34 years.

The upcoming U.S. Highway 2 Wrenco Loop to Dover Road project will be discussed at a meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Laclede Community Hall. The Idaho Transportation Department will discuss the $12 million project’s traffic control and construction, which begins in August and should take about a year. Call (208) 772-1288.

At a meeting Tuesday, the county Historic Preservation Commission discussed a grant program that could help two Moscow theaters be named to the National Register of Historic Places. The panel also discussed creating a tour of interesting gravesites in the Moscow cemetery.

The Central Shoshone County Water District is asking customers to cut back on water usage and water yards or irrigate only from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and/or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. until further notice. The district needs to keep water storage tanks filled for fire protection. Recent high demand has caused a shortage which the district is working to correct.

The Libby 14 and 15-year-old All-Stars baseball team made the state Babe Ruth Tournament set for this week in Hamilton, Mont. The team took second in the District 1 Tournament in Kalispell and will play the District 2 first place team at 4 p.m. today in Hamilton.
