Joan Brogan Post Falls

Memorial service for Helen Joan Brogan, 64, is planned for Monday at 1 p.m. at Boswell Hall’s Schuler Auditorium at North Idaho College. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Caldwell, Idaho. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Brogan, who was born in Caldwell, died Sunday from ovarian cancer.

She graduated from high school in Nampa, Idaho, in 1954. She received nurse’s training and graduated from Denver University in Colorado.

Mrs. Brogan returned to Nampa to work as a floor nurse at the old Samaritan and Mercy hospitals while continuing her education. She received a bachelor of science degree from North Nazarene College.

She had worked as a nurse in a private practice in Nampa for seven years and eventually received a master’s degree from Florida University.

In 1965 she married Bud Brogan.

She was involved with nursing programs at several Northwest colleges before settling in Post Falls in 1970. Mrs. Brogan began a career with North Idaho College in 1981 and served as the director of nursing and health education at the time of her death.

She also was commissioned in the Army Reserve and rose to the rank of colonel before retiring in 1998.

Mrs. Brogan was a member of the Chipmunk Grazing Association and the Idaho Girls Rodeo Association, representing them as a former queen at the Snake River Stampede rodeo.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Jodi Brogan of Post Falls; a brother, Dick Bass of Homedale, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Geraldine Peterson Morton, Idaho

Visitation for Geraldine Jane Peterson, 84, will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Service is planned for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Westmond Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at noon at Whispering Pines Cemetery on Lakeshore Drive near Cocolalla. Mrs. Peterson, who was born in Artesian, S.D., died Tuesday.

She lived in Montana before moving to the Sandpoint area.

She married James Peterson and the couple settled in Morton in 1937.

She was a homemaker and worked for 63 years on the Peterson Homestead Ranch. She also served a mission in Salt Lake City for the Mormon Church, where she gathered information for genealogy.

Her husband died in 1984.

She was a member of the Mormon Church and also taught Sunday school, and was active in baking, sewing, quilting, crocheting, Swedish hardanger and tatting.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Thacker of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; a son, Jack Peterson Sr. of Morton; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Kathryn `Kay’ Blanchette Spokane

Memorial service for Kathryn “Kay” Blanchette, 84, and her husband of almost 50 years, Louis “Red,” who died in 1981, will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 5 in the Mausoleum Chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 19-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Blanchette died Saturday. She was born in Coleharbor, N.D.

She was raised in Whitewater, Mont., and graduated from Malta (Mont.) High School.

Mrs. Blanchette was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Colbert.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Blanchette of Spokane and Bonnie Nentwig of Castro Valley, Calif.; a brother, John Mangan of Coeur d’Alene; two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Fred Albert Spokane

Memorial service for Fred Albert, a 75-year Spokane resident, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Missoula, Mr. Albert died Wednesday. He was 93.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Albert worked as a journeyman electrician and electrical contractor in the Spokane area.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Washington State Mineralogical Society and the Rock Rollers Club.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Dolores; three daughters, Phyllis, Patricia Hubbard and Sharon Wesselman; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Charles `Ed’ Oliver Sandpoint

Memorial service for Charles E. ‘Ed’ Oliver, 72, will be held at a later date. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Oliver, who died Thursday, was born in Moscow, Idaho.

He grew up and attended school in Moscow, and served with the Merchant Marines during World War II.

Mr. Oliver returned to the Moscow area after the war and worked in the construction industry and helped build Upham and Gault halls at the University of Idaho.

In 1949 he moved to Sandpoint and married Martha Calvert. He worked for Sandpoint Motors and later for Garrett Freight Lines. He retired after 20 years.

Mr. Oliver moved to Alaska in 1975 and worked as a truck driver in the construction industry. He returned to Sandpoint in 1977 and continued to drive a truck and haul livestock and construction materials until retiring again in 1995.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union.

His wife died in 1974.

Survivors include a son, Terry Oliver; two stepdaughters, Michelle Bristow and Stephanie Stevens; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Ann Raiha Silverton, Idaho

Memorial service for Ann F. Raiha, 67, will be today at 10 a.m. at the Wallace Assembly of God Church. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Raiha, who was born in Walkerville, Mont., died July 21.

She grew up and attended school in Butte, Mont. In 1951 she married Roy Raiha.

She had worked for the Anaconda Co., and was a postmaster in Walkerville for 12 years before moving to the Silver Valley in 1968.

Mrs. Raiha worked as a clerk for the Pacific Hotel and Cube in Wallace.

Her husband died in 1983.

Survivors include two sons, Roy Raiha of Gem, Idaho, and Matthew Raiha of Kellogg; three daughters, Roylene Connors of Portland, Ann Gragg of Kellogg and Sarah Gray of Burke, Idaho; a brother, Aaron Ralph of Walkerville; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Verne White Anaheim, Calif.

Mass and burial for Verne White, 82, was Monday in California.

Mrs. White, a former Coeur d’Alene resident, died Thursday. She was born in Wisconsin.

She graduated in 1935 from Coeur d’Alene High School and then attended Whitney Business College in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. White worked for the U.S. Bureau of Entomology and the Forest Service in Coeur d’Alene for five years.

She married Mark White in 1944 and was a homemaker. They later moved to Anaheim.

They owned a cabin at Cougar Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene and returned to the area yearly until three years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include a son, John White; three daughters, Monica Apalateque of Placentia, Calif., Toni Moncrief of Tucson, Ariz., and Cindy Angle; a brother, Henry Hruska of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Rose Bancks of Fairmont, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren.

Theodore Kent Spokane

No service will be held for Theodore R. Kent, 98. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

A 56-year Spokane resident, Mr. Kent died Sunday.

He was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where he graduated from high school in 1922.

During the late 1930s he was the head of the Idaho State Liquor Control Board in Boise.

Mr. Kent owned and operated a lumber mill in Idaho. He also worked as a logger. He later worked as a sales manager for Union Iron Works and retired in 1966.

He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Eileen; a son, Andrew Kent of Kalispell, Mont.; a daughter, Beverly Wood of Yarmouth Port, Mass.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Archie Preston Potlatch, Idaho

No service will be held for Archie Preston, 79, at his request. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Oak Grove, Del., Mr. Preston died Sunday.

He graduated in 1939 from Central High School in Duluth, Minn.

Mr. Preston entered in the Army Air Corps in 1939 and served as a radio operator and mechanic gunner with the 11th Air Force. He also served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He was discharged in 1945 as a corporal.

In 1946 he married Marion Beaulieu. They lived in Long Beach, Calif. Mr. Preston worked as an instrumentation engineer for the North American Aviation Co. and retired in 1973.

He and his wife moved back to Duluth, where he worked as a maintenance mechanic for the University of Minnesota. He retired in 1981.

They moved to Potlatch in 1981.

His wife died in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Finn and Donna Quiring, both of Potlatch; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
