Obituaries

Glenn Biddle Loon Lake, Wash.

Memorial service for Glenn D. Biddle, 79, will be at 1 p.m. today at Granite Point Park on Loon Lake. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Biddle, who was born in Newport, Wash., died May 21.

He grew up at Granite Point Resort on Loon Lake and had lived there his entire life.

He graduated from Deer Park High School in 1939 and then attended Washington State University. He received a juris doctorate from Gonzaga Law School in 1948.

Mr. Biddle served in the Air Force during World War II as a B-17 pilot in the North Africa and European theaters.

He married Betty Garske in 1945.

Mr. Biddle practiced law in both Spokane and Stevens counties. He was an attorney for the city of Deer Park for many years and the Stevens County Public Utilities District for 32 years.

He also was the owner and operator of Granite Point Park on Loon Lake.

Mr. Biddle was active in the preservation of Loon Lake. He was involved with the Sportsmen’s Association and the Washington State Sports Council. He was a founding member of the Eastern Washington Resort Association and the Loon Lake Property Owners Association.

Mr. Biddle was involved with the forming of the Clayton, Loon Lake, and Deer Park Water districts, the Loon Lake Sewer District and Stevens County Fire District 1. He also helped to preserve the Loon Lake Post Office and the Loon Lake Grade School.

He was a 50-year member of the Washington Bar Association and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge. He also was active in many Loon Lake and Stevens County preservation groups and was honored by both the Stevens County and Loon Lake Historical societies for his contributions.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nancy Jo Biddle Shallbetter Rogg and Linda Biddle Haley; a sister, Ruth Crossett; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Loon Lake Congregational Church, Loon Lake Historical Society or Hospice of Spokane.

Laura Benton Spokane

Service for Laura Adella Benton, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Benton, who was born in Sheridan, Wyo., died Monday. She was a 60-year Spokane resident.

She worked at the National Biscuit Co. during World War II and at Western Hotels in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1965 to 1967. She moved back to Spokane in 1967.

She was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church and was in the choir. She also was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Her husband of 56 years, James, died in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Thiele and Beverly Reinhardt, both of Spokane; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.

Frederick Goodrich Spokane

Memorial Mass for Frederick M. Goodrich, 58, was Tuesday at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church. Private burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goodrich, who was born in Colville, Wash., died Friday.

He was a sign maker for the Air Force.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, LaVella; a son, Frederick Montgomery; three stepsons, William, Robert and Fred Hampton; two daughters, Dawn and Wendy Goodrich; two stepdaughters, Barbara Hampton and Mona Asker; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Elsie Hagan Spokane

No service will be held for Elsie M. Hagan, 86, at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hagan, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday. She was a 30-year Spokane resident.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, George, died in 1986.

Survivors include a son, Jack Hagan of Seattle; two sisters and a grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sister Barbara Price S.P. Spokane

Funeral Mass for Sister Barbara Marie Price, S.P. (Flora Mary Price) will be at 8:30 a.m. today at Mount St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Price, who was born in Meeteetse, Wyo., died Monday. She was 88.

She was a Sister of Providence for 67 years.

Sister Price graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1931. She then entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Providence in Seattle in 1932.

Her first profession of vows was in 1934, and her final vows in 1937.

Sister Price’s ministry of teaching extended from 1934 to 1981 at various schools, including at St. Thomas Home in Great Falls, Mont., for a combined total of 13 years, St. Benedict School in Roundup, Mont., for two years, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Wallace for five years, St. Francis Xavier School in Missoula for about 17 years, St. Gerald’s School in Great Falls for eight years, and St. Patrick School in Walla Walla for two years.

She was given the Ignatian Award in 1973 at the graduation exercises of Loyola High School, which is now Loyola Sacred Heart, for her years of dedication as a Sister of Providence.

Sister Price served as a pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane from 1981 until 1993. She worked in the Province Archives at Mount St. Joseph part time from 1993 until 1995, when she retired.

Survivors include four cousins, Father Alexander McDonald, S.J., of Seattle, Mary McIntosh of Martintown, Ontario, Helen Turney of Hardin, Mont., and Grace Carlson of Meeteetse.

Elaine Johnson Spokane

Memorial open house for Elaine B. Johnson, 62, will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Manito Golf and County Club. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Circle, Mont., died Friday.

She graduated from Gallatin High School in Bozeman, Mont., and then attended the University of Montana where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She later attended Montana State University.

Mrs. Johnson moved to Spokane in the 1960s and worked for Northwest Airlines for eight years.

In 1985 she became a part owner of Knit N’ Needle.

She was active in the Manito Golf and Country Club’s women’s golf and junior golf program. She was a member of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Tom; two daughters, Jennifer Johnson of Spokane and Tina Jones of Everett; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Spokane.

Leslie Rukes Post Falls

Memorial service for Leslie L. “Les” Rukes, 83, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Falls Christian Assembly of God Church in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Rukes, who was born in Kansas City, Kan., died Friday.

He married Geraldine Haffling in 1952 and lived in Crestline, Calif., where he worked as an aerospace engineer with Schultz Tool and Manufacturing until retiring in 1971.

Mr. Rukes moved to Post Falls in 1983 and was a member of Falls Christian Assembly of God Church. He was active in hunting, fishing and motorcycle sports.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years; two sons, Robert Scrimes of Cedarpines Park, Calif., and Clay Rukes of Spokane; a daughter, Robbie Marchbanks of Post Falls; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bernice Robertson Spokane

Service for Bernice J. Robertson, 85, was Wednesday at the Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial followed the service.

Mrs. Robertson, who was born in Oscar Township, Minn., died Saturday. She was a 53-year Spokane resident.

She was a cook and baker for District 81, primarily at Rogers High School for 10 years.

Mrs. Robertson was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and a 30-year member of the Sons of Norway.

Her husband of 53 years, Robert, died in 1988.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Bjordahl and Donna Miller, and three sons, Rodney, Robert Jr. and Richard Robertson, all of Spokane; two sisters, thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mildred Konsbruck Spokane

Funeral Mass for Mildred E. Konsbruck, 90, will be at 9 a.m. today at St. Paschal Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery on east Trent. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Konsbruck, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Monday.

She and her husband owned and operated the Aladdin Cleaners for 10 years.

She was a member of St. Paschal’s Catholic Church and a former member of the St. Paschal’s Altar Society.

Her husband of 47 years, Carl, died in 1986.

Steven Bergman Kennewick

Funeral Mass for Steven Bergman, 48, will be at 10 a.m. today at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church in Kennewick. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Cemetery on East Trent Avenue in Spokane. Mueller’s Tri-Cities Funeral Home in Kennewick is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bergman, who was born and raised in Spokane, died Saturday.

He was a district sales manager for Mount Hood Beverage Co.

He moved to Kennewick from Spokane 10 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda; a son, Nik Bergman of Spokane; two daughters, Stevie and Kali Bergman, both of Kennewick; his parents, Paul and Gazel Bergman; and three brothers, Robert Bergman of Olympia, Allen Bergman of Boise and Mark Bergman of Kennewick.

Mark Peterson Spokane

Vigil service for Mark Randal Peterson, 41, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

Mr. Peterson, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

He was a graduate of Shadle Park High School and was a painter.

Survivors include his father, Robert Peterson Sr.; his stepmother, Maureen Peterson; eight sisters, Priscilla Giampietri, Jenny Cyrus, Barbara Klinger, Mary Schoener, Paula Lewis, Theresa Murphy, Sonja Cavenago and Laura Brantly; and five brothers, Robert Jr., Patrick, Daniel J., Daniel E., and Christopher Peterson.

Mike Bascetta Spokane

Rosary service for Mike Bascetta, 80, will be today at 7 p.m at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Bascetta, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died May 26.

He worked in real estate.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Jr. and Gary Bascetta, a brother, Joe Bascetta, and two sisters, Elberta Walker and Josephine Maier, all of Spokane.

Hester Kirby Greenacres

Visitation for Hester M. Kirby, 83, will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Kirby, who was born in LaCygne, Kan., died Monday.

She owned and operated Kirby Hazen, a nursing home in Spokane.

Her husband, Harold, died in 1969.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Kirby of Spokane; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Marion Felzman Spokane

Memorial service for Marion D. Felzman, 105, will be at 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Felzman, who was born in London, died Saturday. She was an 80-year Spokane resident.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, John Felzman; and two grandchildren

David Mooney Spokane

Memorial service for David G. Mooney, 57, will be at 3 p.m. June 9 at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mooney, who was born in Tacoma, died May 24.

He attended Fergus High School in Montana and joined the Army National Guard in 1962. He served in the infantry.

Mr. Mooney worked at Northwest Seed and Pet for 27 years.

Survivors include his partner of 24 years, Joseph Halversen; and two brothers, Charles Mooney of Spokane and Richard Mooney of Helena.

Vivian Luttrell Hayden Lake, Idaho

Visitation for Vivian Luttrell, 81, will be Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel. Service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Hayden Chapel with burial to follow at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum, Idaho.

Mrs. Luttrell, who was born in El Centro, Calif., died Tuesday.

She grew up in California and married Bill Luttrell in 1936. They lived most of their lives in the Central California area.

Mrs. Luttrell moved to Hayden Lake in 1990.

She was a member of the Church of Christ and was a homemaker and gardener.

Survivors include her husband of more than 63 years; two sons, Tom Luttrell of Republic, Wash., and Gary Luttrell of Patterson, Calif.; four daughters, Ellen and Penny Luttrell, both of Hayden Lake, Kay Vaughn of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Pam Herzog of Rathdrum; a foster daughter, Rachel Barel of Wickenburg; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Francis St. Amand Puyallup, Wash.

No service will be held for Francis C. St. Amand, 81, at his request. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg at a later date.

Mr. St. Amand, who was born in Kellogg, died May 21.

He grew up in the Silver Valley and graduated from Kellogg/Wardner High School. He then served in the Army with the 738th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II.

Mr. St. Amand returned to the Silver Valley after his military service and worked as a truck driver for various oil companies, retiring in 1983.

He moved to Puyallup 1-1/2 years ago to be near family.

He was active in flyfishing.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Patricia Lester of Puyallup and Gloria Noyen of Smelterville, Idaho; three brothers, Damase St. Amand of Smelterville, William St. Amand of Sand Springs, Okla., and Rex St. Amand of Kellogg; a sister, Roseline Lickfold of Colville, Wash.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Jerry Smith Spokane

Memorial service for Jerry Lee Smith, 54, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Church of the Open Bible. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Pensacola, Fla., died May 23.

He moved to Spokane in 1946.

Mr. Smith graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1964 and served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He received his master’s degree in art from Whitworth College in 1983.

Mr. Smith was active in Point Man International Ministries and with the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include a daughter, Tricia Smith of Spokane; four sons, Josh and Lee Smith, both of Spokane, Danny Bichler of Post Falls and Jeff Bichler of Medical Lake; his foster mother, Ruth Southwick; a sister, Susan Reiger of Napa, Calif.; a brother, Ed Smith of Coolin, Idaho; and five grandsons.

Virginia Jacobsen Spokane

Service for Virginia M. Jacobsen, 56, will be at 1 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Jacobsen, who was born in Sandpoint, died Sunday. She was 54-year Spokane resident.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Moran Fair Association, Lilac City Patrol, Junior Sheriff’s Posse and the Spokane County 4-H Club.

Survivors include her husband of four years, Eric; four sons, Joseph and Rick Estinson, and Jeff Jacobson, all of Spokane, and Steve Ecker of Topsham, Maine; three daughters, Debbie and Racy Estinson, both of Spokane, and Susan Estinson of Portland; her mother, Florence Clark of Brookings, Ore.; her stepfather, Kenny Clark of Rockford; two brothers, Nick Ewing of Troy, Mich., and Barry Ewing of Seattle; and seven grandchildren.

Conrad Geston Jr. Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Conrad J. “Connie” Geston Jr., 76, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Military honors will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Geston, who was born in Grafton, N.D., died May 25.

He grew up in Thief River Falls, Minn., and served in the Army as a combat engineer in the South Pacific during World War II.

After his military discharge, Mr. Geston attended college at North Dakota State and moved to Coeur d’Alene in the early 1950s.

He worked as a bartender for 35 years at several area clubs in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Veterans of Foreign Wars and a charter member of the Hayden Lake Eagles Lodge, Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge and Coeur d’Alene Cooties No. 3.

Mr. Geston traveled extensively.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Alfreeda Hayes of Coeur d’Alene; a son, Greg Geston of Stanwood, Wash.; three daughters, Brenda Fletcher of Sacramento, Calif., Vickie Geston of Walla Walla and Kristi Geston of Spokane; seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
