When To Use A ‘Provisional Ball’

Private Clubs

Do you play provisional balls when needed? Do you know what that means? Here’s the scoop.

A “provisional ball” is a ball played under Rule 27-2 for a ball, which may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds.

If there is any doubt that your ball is lost of our of bounds, play a provisional ball from the spot you last played.

You must announce to your playing partners that you are playing a provisional ball.

If you do not announce that you are playing a provisional ball, the ball you hit becomes your ball in play.
