Classic Canoeing
Paddling
Canoeists and kayakers are planning some rapid transit on June 17 for the Spokane River Canoe Classic.
“River levels should be ideal for the race,” said Jim Ledford of Mountain Gear, which is sponsoring the annual event.
The fun-style race, in which all participants and volunteers are eligible for prizes in the post-event drawings, will begin at 9 a.m. at Corbin Park in Post Falls.
Participants can enter the 6-mile course, which includes mild rapids and ends at Harvard Road Bridge. The 13-mile marathon course is geared to more experienced paddlers and ends at Plantes Ferry Park.
The event has separate categories for men, women and mixed teams, as well as solo and tandem categories for canoe and kayak.
All boats must pass safety requirements, which include bow and stern lines, bailers and flotation. Paddlers must be wearing life preservers and equipped with a whistle (Kootenai County law).
Entry fees are $15 per person if paid before Friday. Info: 325-9000.
