Disney CEO Michael Eisner is urging Congress to strengthen copyright protection on the World Wide Web, calling Internet piracy “the most devastating thing that’s happened to the entertainment industry in 75 years.” Musicians are already being victimized by illegal copying and downloading of their music over the Internet, Eisner said Wednesday. With faster computers and Internet connections being developed, “movies will be next,” he said. “Soon it will be possible to transmit perfect copies … around the globe without our knowledge, participation or consent.”

A group of garment workers sued Donna Karan International in federal court Wednesday, saying the designer’s chic togs were made under sweatshop conditions in Manhattan’s Fashion District. The employees, mostly Chinese immigrants who don’t speak English, said they were forced to work long hours with no overtime pay. Some claimed they were paid less than minimum wage. Donna Karan International issued a statement saying it could not comment on the lawsuit because it had not yet reviewed it.

Minnesota regulators unanimously approved the merger of U S West and Qwest Communications. The deal still requires the backing of Arizona, Washington and Utah.
