The Washington Department of Health estimates 12,000 people in Washington state are infected with HIV, the virus causing AIDS. Many may not know they are infected.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there are 40,000 new HIV infections in the United States each year. Half hit people under age 25. Most show no signs or symptoms of the disease for years and are unaware they are infected.
Early knowledge of HIV infections allows people to obtain the maximum benefit from primary care and treatment, the Washington Health Department says.
