Othello

A recent study by the Washington Health Foundation found more mothers in Adams County are forsaking cigarettes during pregnancy. In 1995, 8.1 percent of expectant mothers here smoked. By 1998, the number had fallen to 6.3 percent. The average for rural counties in the state is 18 percent.

Grant County

Grand Coulee

A spectacular fireworks display will explode over the world’s largest laser light show July 4. The celebration starts at 10 p.m. with the famous laser light show. The 10:35 p.m. fireworks display, choreographed by Entertainment fireworks, is courtesy of Coulee Dam Casino. There is no charge for either event. Free entertainment begins at 4 p.m.

Lincoln County

Harrington

Heather Mowbray, 19, was arrested in connection with a string of residential and business burglaries plaguing Harrington. Undersheriff Wade Magers says 10, maybe 12, robberies are included in the investigation. One male suspect is being investigated, and other names are expected to pop up on the suspect list.

Pend Oreille County

Usk

The Port of Pend Oreille signed a resolution to officially move ahead with plans for a “pilot” development site on Newport’s east side. The development, or business incubator site, will give new businesses a place to build and grow. The port is aggressively recruiting agencies and parties interested in economic development of the property. Property is located near the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad yard and Choo Chews.

Stevens County

Colville

A small farm in Stevens County has found that supplying Bill Gates with goat cheese is big business. Quillisascut Cheese Farm supplies gourmet goat cheese to the Microsoft campus and select restaurants in the Seattle area. Becoming more famous, the farm is a featured stop on this year’s WSU Cooperative Extension farm tour. All are invited to tour the Quillisascut kitchen July 3 and taste cheese delights prepared by sous-chef Karl Vennes of Seattle restaurant Cascadia. For information, call (509) 738-2011.
