Indians Nip Canadians In The 10Th
Henrry Alvarez took one for the team Monday at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Alvarez, the Spokane Indians catcher from the Dominican Republic, was hit by a pitch in the 10th inning and eventually scored on a routine grounder to give the Indians a 7-6 Northwest League baseball win over the Vancouver Canadians.
It was the second straight win for the Indians, who opened a five-game series with the Canadians on Sunday with a 7-3 win.
Spokane’s Brad Skyles (0-0) will start on the mound tonight against Tyler Gilpatrick (0-1).
Vancouver held a 4-1 lead going into the sixth inning, but Justin Gemoll ripped a two-run home run over the left field fence and Alvarez later hit an RBI single to tie the game at 4.
The Canadians regained the lead with a two-run seventh, but Spokane answered in the eighth with two two-out bases-loaded walks. Cade Sanchez came on in relief with two on and started strong with two straight strikeouts before the wheels came off. He walked Billy Keppinger, Marco Cunningham and Darren Fenster, sending home Gemoll and Justin Cowan.
After Alvarez was hit by a pitch, Juan Guzman hit a pinch single and both runners moved up on a passed ball. With the infield drawn up, Cunningham hit a shot to second, but Alvarez beat the throw home for the win. Mark Newell (2-0) fanned two in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.
