Tyson Making Dinner Plans
There was no shortage of commentary from sportswriters across the nation after Mike Tyson declared he wanted to eat Lennox Lewis’ children.
Kevin B. Blackistone of the Dallas Morning News chimed in:
“And we thought for all these years that the way to handle a hungry man was with the Man-Handler. Apparently, it is with candied man.
“Mike Tyson won’t ever be invited to the Vegetarian of the Year awards banquet or anyone’s Man of the Year awards banquet, either, though he might invite himself to the latter if he hears it’s a roast.”
Vecsey full of it
Bill Benner of the Indianapolis Star says the confusion about whether Isiah Thomas will or won’t be the next coach of the Pacers stems from Peter Vecsey and the NBC TV crew, including Thomas, “using their peacock pulpit to pass along information in hopes it becomes true.
“Which, come to think of it, is how Vecsey makes his living. Throw enough manure out there, and hopefully some of it will stick to the barn.
“That is, when he isn’t shepherding his young son through locker rooms in search of autographs.”
Sharpe as a rusty tack
Rick Telander of the Chicago Sun-Times is thankful that Don Ohlmeyer didn’t hire Sterling Sharpe as a member of the “Monday Night Football” announcing team.
“The former Green Bay Packer was the rudest athlete this media creature ever was forced to interview,” Telander said. “Profane, sarcastic, mean to the point of intimidation and cruelty, Sharpe was about as communicative and sweet as a sledgehammer.”
Olympics for rich and famous
Those with a strong need to watch Olympic figure skating from the luxury of a suite can fulfill their wish - for $154,000.
That’s the going rate the Delta Center is charging to rent the 22-seat suites for 10 sessions of figure skating and four sessions of short-track speedskating. A 32-seat suite also is available for $268,800.
Springing for a suite that seats 20 at the E Center for all 30 men’s hockey games costs up to $230,000.
Demand for the pricey seats already has begun.
An SLOC brochure says a suite at the Delta Center includes “great views of the arena … luxury furnishings, a television, telephone and private facilities.”
First it was bribery, now it’s highway robbery. It’s a natural progression.
