Felts Field Buys Land For Expansion
Felts Field has closed a deal this week to purchase 1.7 acres for future hangar development near the southeast corner of the airport.
Airport spokesman Todd Woodard said the small parcel near the intersection of Rutter Avenue and Dora Road has been on Felts Field’s expansion plans for the past five years.
“This is one of the last areas of developable land,” near the airport, Woodard said.
The extra room for hangars and internal taxi lanes is much needed. The number of small aircraft based at Felts Field has increased from 283 to 323 in the past three years, Woodard said.
The selling price of the land was $170,000. However, the airport will pay a total of $210,000 after the cost of demolishing a house on the land and other fees are paid.
Felts Field will use a federal entitlement from the Federal Aviation Administration’s airport improvement program to pay for 90 percent of the purchase, Woodard said. The remaining costs will be paid by the airport.
