Milton Clifford Coeur d’Alene

A gathering for family and friends of Milton L. Clifford, 81, will be Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the family home in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Hagerman, Idaho, Mr. Clifford died Wednesday.

He graduated from high school in Hagerman and then received an education in diesel and auto engineering at Washington Technical Institute in Seattle.

Mr. Clifford volunteered for the Army Air Corps and was selected to enter Class 42X, an accelerated experimental course designed to train flight instructors. He graduated from military training at Randolph Field, Texas, and was assigned to the experimental group known as Hap Arnold’s Guinea Pigs.

Mr. Clifford moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1949 and began a 38-year career with Pack River Lumber Co., starting as a machinist at the frame factory at Northwest Timber, and advancing to production manager of 14 plants located in Idaho, Wenatchee and Bozeman, Mont.

Mr. Clifford was active in traveling, hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Florence; a son, Michael Clifford of Shawnee, Kan.; two daughters, Brooke Clifford and Marsha Wise, both of Portland; and a sister, Edna Rea of Wendell, Idaho.

Frankie Fishgrab Cusick, Wash.

Graveside service for Frankie Ruth Fishgrab, 70, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Newport (Wash.) Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fishgrab, who died Monday, was born in Campo, Colo.

In 1950 she married Chester Fishgrab. They moved to Cusick in 1982.

Mrs. Fishgrab was a bookkeeper for her husband’s blacksmith shop, and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Mick Fishgrab of Cusick, Alvin Payne of Longmont, Colo., and Jay Fishgrab of Montpelier, Idaho; three daughters, Jimmy Fishgrab of Cusick, Edith Smith of Priest River, Idaho, and Jan Van Alyne of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a sister, Ellen Belleau of Denver; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary McNew Sandpoint

Memorial service for Mary Rachel McNew, 67, will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Sandpoint.

Mrs. McNew, who was born in Marietta, Texas, died June 22.

She graduated from high school in 1949 in Naples, Texas, and married James McNew in 1950. They divorced in 1956.

She married Ted Fields in 1957 and they divorced in 1961. In 1969 she graduated from Cisco Junior College in Texas with a nursing degree.

She married J.D. George in 1961 and divorced him in 1969.

She remarried her first husband, James McNew in 1969. They lived in Twin Falls, Idaho, where she graduated from the College of Southern Idaho with an associate degree as a registered nurse.

Mrs. McNew later settled in the Sandpoint area and opened the Assistant Nurses Training and Education System in 1992. She graduated in 1997 from the University of Idaho with a bachelor of science education degree.

She sold her nursing school in 1998. She had worked at several hospitals and nursing homes across the country during her lifetime.

Mrs. McNew was a musician and vocalist and attended Faith Evangelical Free Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James.

Survivors include two sons, James McNew of Sandpoint and Rex Fields of Cisco; three sisters, Jan Hudson of Odessa, Texas,, Karen Hollingsworth of De Soto, Texas, and Mary Jo Fritzpatrick of Coleman, Texas; and two granddaughters.

Ada Klein Sandpoint

Private service for Ada B. Klein, 97, will be held at a later date. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Klein, who was born in Corinne, Utah, died June 23.

She grew up and attended school in Pittsburgh, and later moved to Southern California.

She married Joe Klein; who died in 1957.

Mrs. Klein moved to Sandpoint in 1987.

Survivors include a son, Jim Klein of Sandpoint; a sister, Marjorie Blanke of Seal Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lee Case Rathdrum, Idaho

No service will be held for Lee A. Case, 64, at his request. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Case, who was born in Buhl, Idaho, died Wednesday.

He grew up in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, and later moved to the Rathdrum area, where he worked as a mechanic for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Case of Glenns Ferry and David Case of Boise; two daughters, Pamela of Texas, and Amanda of Kimberly, Idaho; his mother, Clara Irons of Nampa, Idaho; a brother, Jim Case of Idaho Falls; and two sisters, Betty Colson of Hayden, Idaho, and Bonnie Nickolauson of Portland.

William Howe Post Falls

Service for William Hood Howe, 74, will be at 11 a.m. today at The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Spokane. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Minneapolis, Mr. Howe died Sunday.

He graduated from high school in 1944, and served in the Navy during World War II. He was discharged in 1946.

Mr. Howe graduated from Yale University in 1950 with a political science degree, and remained involved with the Army ROTC program at Yale.

After graduation he moved to Spokane and worked for the family lumber business. He later worked for Washington state Department of Labor and Industries. He received a master’s degree in social work from Eastern Washington University in 1984.

He moved to Post Falls eight years ago. He was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity and the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, where he was active in the choir.

His wife of 31 years, Janice, died in 1991.

Survivors include three daughters, Stephanie Aden of Spokane, Eugenia Robson of Graham, Wash., and Anastasia Thacker of Cosby, Tenn.; a sister, Mary Vermeers; a brother, Spaulding Howe; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection Building Fund or the American Lung Association.

Ted Riley Spokane

Graveside service for Ted Riley, 79, was Thursday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Riley, who was born in Kendrick, Idaho, died Sunday.

He was a commercial painter.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; two sons, Donald Riley of Greenacres and Richard Riley of Guffey, Colo.; a brother, Raymond Riley; a sister, Betty Archer; four grandsons and three great-grandsons.

Vincenza Dufresne, S.P. Spokane

Vigil service for Sister Vincenza Dufresne, S.P. (Regina Annette Dufresne), 87, will be at 7 p.m. today at Mount St. Joseph. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Mount St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Vincenza, who was born in Missoula, died Monday.

She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Sprague, Wash., and earned a bachelor’s degree in dietetics in 1945 from the College of Great Falls, Mont. She received a certificate in health care administration in 1968 from the University of Washington. Sister Vincenza entered the Sisters of Providence Novitiate in Seattle in 1931, professed her first vows in 1932 and her final vows in 1935.

She was a dietary aid and dietitian at hospitals and healthcare facilities in Wallace, Idaho, Great Falls, Mont., Sprague, St. Ignatius, Mont., and Missoula, including Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane from 1940 to 1943. From 1958 to 1966 she was an instructor at the School of Nursing in Spokane. She served as superior and administrator at St. Joseph Nursing Home in Spokane from 1967 to 1991. She later was in housekeeping and the dietary department from 1991 to 1994.

Sister Vincenza retired in 1995 and continued to live at Mount St. Joseph where she served on the development cabinet of the retirement fund.

She is survived by a sister, Loretta Butz of Portland.

Volna `Jake’ Jacobs Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Volna E. “Jake” Jacobs, 70, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Jacobs, who was born in Holyoke, Colo., died Wednesday.

He graduated from high school in Holyoke, and in 1948 enlisted in the Navy.

He settled in Everett, Wash., in 1952 after his military discharge.

Mr. Jacobs married Aldena Olson in the late 1950s and worked as an electrician in the Everett area for Judd & Black, before moving to Los Angeles in the early 1970s, where he operated a hotel.

He then moved to Sitka, Alaska and operated Hobby House and Arrowhead Taxi Co., before living in Arizona and Oregon. He moved to Coeur d’Alene earlier this year.

Mr. Jacobs was a member of the Moose Lodge in Alaska.

His wife died in 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Neverdahl of Post Falls and Joni Kuwana of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
