Bennett Pitcher Of Week, Month

Gonzaga University’s senior right-hander Steve Bennett picked up dual awards from the West Coast Conference on Tuesday. Bennett was named the league’s pitcher of the week and of the month.

He received the weekly award for his school-record-tying 18 strikeouts against the University of Washington. Bennett allowed just four hits and walked one while retiring 86 percent of the outs on third strikes.

He struck out the side three times during the game, including four strikeouts in the opening frame.

Bennett was awarded pitcher of the month honors for February as a reward for his 2-1 start. During the opening month of the season, Bennett struck out 34 batters in 19 innings of work, capped off by his 18-strikeout performance.

Bennett will lead the Bulldogs (5-3) into the West Coast Conference opener this weekend against Pepperdine. The three-game series will open the home season for Gonzaga. There will be a single game on Friday and doubleheader on Saturday.

College basketball

University of San Francisco freshman forward Carey Sauer of Newport, Wash., and Pepperdine sophomore forward Nadja Morgan each had big weeks to share the WCC women’s player-of-the week award.

Sauer scored a career-high 28 points against Portland and two nights later scored 25 at Gonzaga. She was 15 of 25 from the field in the two games.

Morgan scored 24 points and had 10 rebounds in a 83-67 victory over Saint Mary’s that clinched the WCC title for the Waves. She followed that up with a team-high 15 points against San Diego. Morgan shot 16 of 23 from the field in the two games.

Pepperdine junior guard Rasheeda Clark averaged 17.9 points per game and led the Waves to an 8-0 record to be picked as player of the month.

The North Idaho College men’s and women’s teams are at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, for the Region 18 tournaments and both face formidable foes.

Today, the NIC women (17-13), seeded sixth, face No. 3 Utah Valley (21-8) at 1 p.m. PST.

The Cardinals men (17-13), seeded eighth, take on top-seeded Snow (24-6) on Thursday at 7.
