Blm Bans Entry To Abandoned Mines

From Staff

The Bureau of Land Management has issued a closure order, banning people from entering any abandoned mines on agency lands in the five North Idaho counties. The agency announced the order Wednesday, citing risks from rotten timbers, unstable explosives, cave-ins and other vestiges of the region’s historic mining activities.

Various agencies, including the BLM, are assessing the numerous abandoned mine sites in North Idaho, officials say. Until these sites are closed and safe, people need to stay out, said Eric Thomson, Coeur d’Alene field manager.
