Senior guard Jerod Moore scored 13 of his 30 points in the second quarter to guide a Mules rally that eliminated the Red Devils. Moore hit 4 of 8 3-pointers and 10 of 13 free throws. Wahkiakum is 24-10 during nine state appearances.

Neah Bay’s Jerry Cross had 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Junior guard Kyle Henderson scored eight during a fourth-quarter rally to allow the Vikings to eliminate the Rangers. Quilcene led by nine early in the fourth quarter, and didn’t relinquish the lead until Henderson’s basket with 7 seconds left. Mossyrock otherwise trailed the entire second half.

Quilcene’s Erik Vandenberg (6-7) had 13 rebounds to lead a 34-25 advantage. The Rangers are 0-6 in three state appearances.

Senior Clint Hull hit 7 of 11 3-pointers, one make shy of the tournament game record, to lift the Billygoats and knock out the Knights.

Hull scored 27 in three quarters’ work to move from 14th place to ninth (233 points) among all-time tournament scorers. He also increased his overall career scoring to 2,140, moving from 12th to 10th on the state’s all-time list in all boys classifications. Hull had been shadowed by Bush’s defense during a Wednesday loss.

“Clint and I talked about these `man-chasing’ defenses, whatever you call them,” said Pateros coach Mike Hull. “I told him to take that as a compliment.”

The Billygoats clamped down on Lance Den Boer and Michael Van Wingerden, who typically combine for 34 Knights points. The two combined for five points on 2-for-17 shooting from the floor.

The Saints roared back from a 12-point deficit, getting 21 points from Tyrone Shephard and Kelly Wyman to send home the Comets.

Shephard and Seth Caine, SL’s top two scorers for the season, didn’t start after violating the team’s curfew following a Wednesday night loss. “We’re a `big-headed’ team and it kind of got to us,” Shephard said. “We needed to swallow some pride and play hard-nosed basketball.”

Shephard scored 17 in the second half, including three in the final 3.5 seconds. Naselle’s Paul Wirkkala missed three 3-point attempts in the final 1:20.

Comets junior Troy Salme scored 22, hitting 8 of 16 field goals.

The Vikings held Ritzville without a field goal for more than 14 minutes, starting late in the first half.

Gar-Pal’s Mitch Kriebel and Adam Elder, both usually in the 6-ppg range, came up big on offense.

Kriebel scored 12 in the first half and Elder matched his season high with 15 points. “We knew they would try to take (Jeremy) Kimble away and (Jason) Fox away on offense,” Elder said.

“We’ve had games when we’ve had to step up. When they gave us the opportunity, we had to do it.”

Gar-Pal has won 10 consecutive games.

The Cougars built a 21-point halftime lead, with J.B. Olsen and Jeremy Groth combining for 36 halftime points, and held off the upstart Blazers.

Olsen scored 14 in the first quarter and applied the defense to 6-9 Ellis Hawes, who was held to five first-half points.

“I just took the shot when I had it,” said Olsen, who even stepped outside for two 3-pointers.

“I hadn’t tried a 3 until district. I haven’t had to because we have Jeremy and Craig (Groth).”

Jeremy Groth hit 14 of 16 free throws to score 25. He surpassed the century mark (120 points) in state career scoring and hit 2,385 overall for his four-year career. He needs 27 points to become the state’s all-time scoring leader.

The Panthers never trailed the defending state-champion Shockers after Joel Knigge’s back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the first quarter.

Eric Smith scored VC’s first seven points. Junior Brent Decker’s 14 second-half points kept Waterville from getting closer than eight points. Decker has 930 career points, including 146 at state.

VC pulled away with a late 12-0 run.

The Eagles built a 15-point lead early in the third quarter and withstood a comeback that saw the Wildcats pull within four.

A 9-0 run in the final 2-1/2 minutes sealed the outcome for SJE, the third-place team in 1999 and ‘98.

“We had a more patient offense in the second half,” said SJE coach Darrell Miller, who leads his Eagles into their third consecutive semifinal. “We worked it around more and got good looks.”

“The last two years have been like this,” said Eagles senior Karl Scheuerman, whose 17 points gave him 145 at state. “I’m hoping the third time’s a charm.”
