Kelowna Squeezes Past Visiting Chiefs

Carsen Germyn’s goal with 1:22 remaining in the second period lifted the Kelowna Rockets to a 2-1 Western Hockey League victory over the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday at Skyreach Place.

The loss leaves the Chiefs (40-20-3-2) with a four-point lead over idle Prince George.

Travis Moen scored with 2 seconds remaining on the power play to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead at the 7:17 mark of the first period. Moen’s seventh goal of the season came he rebounded a Richie Regehr one-timer.

Brent McDonald pulled the Chiefs even with his 23rd goal of the season on an assist from Tim Smith at the 14:05 mark of the first period.

Germyn’s game-winner came on an assist from David Johansson at the 18:38 mark of the second period.

Spokane failed in all seven of its power-play opportunities, while Kelowna connected once in six tries.

Kelowna improved to 22-38-3-2 for the season.

Spokane travels to Seattle on Wednesday for a game against the Thunderbirds before returning home on Friday to play host to the Thunderbirds.

The Chiefs outshot Kelowna 28-17 for the match, but came up empty on all 12 shot attempts against Rockets goalie Kevin Swanson in the final period.

Spokane goalkeeper Jason LaBarbera stopped 17 of 19 shots on goal. Swanson saved 28 of 29.
