First, you need to know that timber industry flack Frank Carroll made hay with an e-mail intercepted from enviros who favor dam breaching. Now, onward. Recently, he and Stefany Bales, another industry spinmeister, met with us to discuss the late, great bark beetle infestation. In an e-mail afterward, Stefany told Idaho Editor Steve Massey she’d enjoyed the chat. And he responded: Ditto. Then, Stefany forwarded Steve’s message to Frank. Who responded: “He thinks you’re a babe.” Only Frank sent the message by mistake to Steve, a happily married man. Who responded: “I think this was meant for Stefany. I’ll let you decide whether to resend it.” What goes around comes around.

Marylinn Heikkila has a sure-fire way to make the Idaho Transportation Board pay more attention to fixing deadly Highway 95. She suggests that John McHugh and his ITB playmates “be required to hold all meetings in the back of a large truck as it drives north and south on Highway 95 between the Canadian border and Winchester.”

Only in Idaho

At Dover, near Sandpoint, you can find street signs that read 20 mph - alongside signs that post spring breakup limits at 25 mph … At the Kootenai County Courthouse, you can find Ron Rankin, a white Mormon who wants to be a delegate for presidential wannabe Alan Keyes, a black Catholic … At Hope, you can find a road sign directing travelers another 1-1/2 miles to “Beyond Hope Resort.”

Gotcha

A prankster learned a lesson when he tried to steal a $250 Budweiser mirror from Mik ‘N Maks and tangled with employee Wendy Rose Dart. Aptly named, Wendy darted after him, jumped into the back of his pickup and grabbed the mirror. Alas, Wendy dropped the mirror when she lost her balance. And it broke. But the bad luck wasn’t Wendy’s. She delayed the scofflaw enough for barflies to get a license number … So, how did Kellogg’s Steve Nagode blow the probation he got for dynamiting sandbags? He threatened to blow up his probation officer. What we have hyar is failure to communicate … I can see how that kid ended up at Children’s Village. You know, the one whose aunt tried to sneak some marijuana to her in a change of clothes. That acorn didn’t fall far from the tree … You need a license to report road rage - a driver’s license. Ask Jay R. Kendall, 34, of Wallace. The Idaho News Observer reports Kendall was arrested after he told police that an 18-wheeler had run him off the road. The gendarmes pulled both drivers over - and carted Kendall off to jail when he failed to produce a valid license.

Betcha Assessor Duane Little was surprised when Gore 2000 listed him as “former assessor” and “Dwight” in a snooze release identifying Shoshone County coordinators … Our Woman In Boise is dedicated to bringing you the best Idaho Statehouse news. How dedicated, you ask? Betsy Russell’s trying to figure out how to write with that broken right shoulder she suffered a week ago in a skiing accident … The Buzz is Rep. Hilde Kellogg and Kootenai County GOPers are holding off announcing her retirement to prevent cultural conservatives from getting a head start in a race for her seat. But my Statehouse Berry Pickers can’t confirm. Stay tuned … Quotable Quote: “They should be like Casper the Ghost with eyes” - KVNI’s Jeff McLean during the Lake City-Pocatello state playoff game describing how invisible basketball referees should be … Fret not for the ticket holder who failed to claim that $100,000 from the Idaho lottery. The money goes back into the hopper and every other sucker gets another chance at it - a very slim chance.

Parting shot

Ex-streets superintendent Tim Klein and Mayor Steve Judy won’t be swapping Christmas cards. Consider this analysis by Klein on Judy’s management style: “I think he’s doing a lot of things wrong as mayor, and I think he’s awfully young. Perhaps he needs a good spanking.”
