Intel Loses Speed Lead

From Staff

The first desktop computers to use ultrafast one-gigahertz processors are coming to market months ahead of schedule, and with no “Intel Inside” stickers on the box.

In a public relations coup, rival chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has begun shipping the new one-gigahertz version of its Athlon processor chip. That puts AMD out in front of industry leader Intel Corp., which is expected to introduce its own one-gigahertz chip later this week.

Most PCs use chips that are compatible with the “X86” design created by Intel. But AMD has snatched the speed lead from Intel with the Athlon, a line of processors the company introduced last year. The first Athlons ran at 500 megahertz, leading Intel to roll out faster Pentium III chips to keep up. Last month, AMD took the lead with an 850-megahertz chip, compared to Intel’s 800-megahertz Pentium III. Now AMD is offering Athlons at 900, 950, and 1,000 megahertz, or one gigahertz.
