Churches Offering Evening Services During Lent

Lent has begun, bringing with it a slew of weekly prayer sessions, worship services and fellowship opportunities.

Between now and Easter, several South Side churches are planning to host such weekly events.

Central Lutheran Church, 512 S. Bernard, is offering a worship service at 7 p.m. each Wednesday during Lent.

The service will follow the form of the Holden Evening Prayer, a liturgy of song and Scripture reading. It will be preceded by a soup and bread dinner at 6:15 p.m.

Worship services at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 314 S. Spruce, will begin at 6:45 p.m. each Thursday during Lent.

Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline, is offering a series of Lenten programs for all ages.

Each Wednesday the church will offer dinner at 6 p.m. followed by classes for adults and children in grade three and up at 6:45 p.m. Each evening will close with a brief worship service at 7:45 p.m.

Child care will be available for children below third grade. The cost of the dinner is $3 per person. A book is required for the adult class and costs $8.

Classes and dinner are also on the menu at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry. Each Wednesday evening will begin with a light dinner at 6 p.m. followed by a teaching session. Topics of discussion during the sessions will include an update on the search for a bishop, a talk on the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, a night of learning about ministry, and a presentation on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Clare Center, a Franciscan spirituality center at 4624 E. Jamison Road, is planning a Lenten prayer series on Wednesdays. It will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday through April 5. Those participating are asked to bring a donation of nonperishable food items.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2 W. Third, has also begun offering weekly suppers and worship services each Wednesday. The evening begins at 6:15 p.m. with a soup supper followed by a worship service at 7 p.m.

The church is also planning a special worship service this weekend to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

A historical video will be shown at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. It includes film of church picnics in 1937 and 1947, the demolition of the old wooden church in 1951, and the dedication of the current building.

There will also be a display of old photos.

The worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will feature guest speaker Warren Schumacher, Northwest District president. Some of the church’s previous pastors will also be on hand. Call the church office at 747-0984 for more information.

Cake auction at Unity Church

Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard, will host its fifth annual “Sweet Deal” cake auction after the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday. The cakes will be on display until the bidding beings.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the church’s youth group.
