Sci-Fi Thriller Predictable But Offers A Few Twists

The surprisingly enjoyable sci-fi thriller “Pitch Black” exceeds all of my admittedly pessimistic expectations.

With evolving characters and a creative directorial style this movie, although predictable, still manages to catch you off guard with a few surprise twists.

But by far the most interesting character is homicidal maniac Riddick (played by Vin Diesal) who really drives the story and remains ever calm as he shares his cynical insights on life with his fellow temporary survivors of a crash.

In fact, the part of the movie I enjoy the most is when he escapes the custody of the bounty hunter Johns (Cole Hauser), and the cinematographer proceeds to take the viewer on what could best be likened to Where’s Waldo? on acid. In fact the real suspense in the film revolves around his decisions and not around the fairly goofy looking aliens who play only a supporting role in the 100-minute film.

This movie is by no means award-winning, but it does manage to be creative in its own sci-fi formula flick sort of way.

The plot is a little weak and convenient, the aliens look more humorous than deadly and - let’s face it - Hauser is a serious Matthew McConaughey wannabe who just gets on your nerves. But the eclectic cinematography and several talented acting performances make this comic book on film well worth the time to see.
